I have never knowingly played with my sprocket carrier.

Sorry, I'm not up with bike porn - I don't know what one is.

Beyond wheels and petrol tank and handlebars it's all a mystery - anybody shed any light on this for me.

I feel so inadequate I may need to read something about mechanics.

Nick it is the item in the middle of the rear wheel that the chain sprocket bolts to. It should move at the same time as the wheel turns. See if will move without the wheel moving ( on the paddock stand)

2010 25000 hard miles 6mm fwd/rear free play cush drive rubbers are sweet, i use white grease to pack them out a bit . no lateral play at all.

That sounds ok to me. I don't mind swapping out the rubbers at 20k :0) I just think its more likely to be every 6k on a 2012 bike, either that or an aftermarket company makes some that last better than stock.

Aha - Thanks Beamish!

No point reading these threads and not asking questions or I'll remain mechanically inept forever.

(It's my first bike.... *enter comment here ".............." re stupidity level)

It's Thursday and I've already learnt something.

Excellent.

Glad to help Nick....... An S1000rr as your first bike! Holy shisne! Stay safe.

I've done 2K road miles last summer and will graduate from 'sport mode' this year to 'permanent race' - have a couple of track days in the pipeline too in order to get me into good habits 'early doors.......'

Taking it steady and enjoying the bike.

If this should be my last post I'd like to thank everybody for their advice and support - it's been great.......

Have you taken any extra training Nick?

I hope its not your last post :concern:

Me too - not had too many moments, just been getting some road craft and miles under my belt.

And lol - err no, not really. I rode snowboards and mountain bikes competitively in my former years and had the odd manic afternoon off-road on a crosser but not a lot of tarmac orientated action, no.

I just need a bit of applied coaching, looking for some 1:1 advice on a track day to get my body positioning right from the off in the corners. It's the money that's a barrier to be honest!

Anyway must not hijack Beamish's thread on sprockety malleability.....

You sound like you have your head screwed on, you will be fine. Enjoy.

I have started a new thread titled 'Official BMW fact and figures regarding Sprocket Carrier play' so it doesnt get lost amongst in the answers. The info you are providing is all valuable data for us and eventually BMW who are 'not aware of any issues surrounding the rear carrier'

The carrier houses the bearing so your first carrier may have had a failed bearing also. Lateral movement is not acceptable I am just talking about the fwd and aft. I await BMWs answer with interest.

I am having to have a rethink after receiving the latest info as lateral play is allowed up to 1.5mm (pls see Official BMW fact and figures regarding Sprocket Carrier play' post)

Yes I know, I initially thought it was a bearing issue & that's why I insisted they replace the S/C/Bearing after they decided to just replace the c/rubbers (which DIDN'T resolve any of the lateral play or all the rotational - due to the SC moving away from the hub). Only the replacement rubbers AND carrier removed all the play.

Edit* I'd be interested to hear the reason for the lateral play developing.

Keith Code: Twist of the Wrist 2 (£20 book)...nothing will make you faster (or gain a better understanding of bike control) for £20. Arguable, but IMO it will make you safer too.
Also consider the more track focused Soft Science book.

Hello mate 2010 4k no play - hope they (BMW) see sense and sort it for you.

Right I spent most of the day up at the dealers trying different rear wheel components from a 0mile 2013 bike. The only component change that solved the carrier play was a wheel swap. Looks like the recess for the wheel bearing was incorrect at manufacture so the carrier bearing was taking the pain and wearing out prematurely. A 600 mile 2012 bike outside the dealers was also showing the same symptoms so who knows, a batch of bad wheels?
