On my gen 3 I had mine done at 12,000 miles and what a difference it made, I wished I had done it sooner.

I think I would have it done every 2 years regardless of miles.

I have my suspension serviced at the end of every season. The difference is instantly noticeable.
 
When you're track'ing a bike the suspension is usually serviced by someone like Darren at MCT, and you tell the dealer to leave well alone!

By a main dealer? Or do you do it yourself? If by the main dealer do you ask them to set the oil gap to a non standard gap?

I always have my suspension serviced by a specialist and never by a dealer.
 
Hi Baz, What weight are you? need to set my Gen4 for the track (track use 90%) is this setting for track or road use. Cheers
 
There was someone out at Catalunya who was given these settings to try. He said it worked pretty well for him and said to try them as a starting point. I didn't have my bike at the time so not tried yet, but this is what I'm going to set them at.
It was mainly the suspension settings I wanted.

I don't know what the level should be but,it is now 100mm with 7.5w oil.

My dealer finally got back to me with stock specs today.

Stock oil weight is 'Type 2' which equates to 11.5w.
Stock air gaps are Left 135mm Right 190mm.


It doesn't surprise me that your oil weight was reduced. However, it did surprise me that your air gaps were reduced (I believe smaller air gaps stiffen the suspension?)

Were your air gaps measured with springs and spacers removed?
 
Seems like a heavy weight of oil.
Surely using 7.5 instead of 11.5 would chnge the shim pack behaviour markedly?

For info - I raised an official complain with BMW, following their complaints process, about not being able to adjust the DDC in any of the road modes. I raised it with my dealer first who said they had not had any similar complaints. My dealer then gave me the BMW complains number to log the complaint. The person in the complaints department had little knowledge of BMW products and zero knowledge of bikes. They logged my details and details of my complaint (not easy since they had no clue what I was talking about). There then followed 3 weeks and various phone calls between me, the complains department and the Motorrad department (you're not allowed to speak direct to the Motorrad team as a punter) offering various different solutions. First up I was sent a link to technical information on the Gen 3 DDC. Second I was told I needed a 2D censor to be able to adjust it. Third reply was I had to switch it to Track Pro modes (at which point you lose some of the road functions). The first two reply's are just wrong. Third reply was just repeating my complaint. On the forth call they finally admitted you cant adjust the DDC in any of the road modes. Not the result I was hoping for but at least they have one complain logged against the issue. If you find, like me, you want to be able to adjust the DDC in the road modes (as you can on the Gen 3) lodge a complaint. It may make no difference to BMW, but then again, if you don't tell them they will never know.
 
Product feedback, feature requesting, isn't a great process with most of these companies sadly.

Are you saying there is no user mode equivalent of the gen 3 ?

Not sure I understand the question - but - this is what I used to do with my Gen 3. In Rain mode you could go into the DDC settings and adjust it between plus 8 and minus 8 (a range of 16). I used to have my bike set really soft in Rain mode (-4 or so from memory - front and back). Then in Road mode I set the DDC to plus 4. If I was on a back road with pot holes and broken surface I switched it to Rain mode. It was GSA comfort like. Once I was back on a decent road surface I put it in Road mode and the suspension firmed up. Doing this you could set the suspension individually for Rain, Road and Sport. As a road bike it worked perfectly for me.

You can't do any of that with a Gen 4. You are only allowed access to the DDC settings once the bike is switched to Track Pro mode which disables various road functions of the bike (media, navigation, cruise control I think). It assumes you are on track. As a road bike, in my opinion, its a massive drop off.

is it not automatically adjusting these settings on the fly anyway?

I know what I bought and happy with it. Made sure I understood how the DDC and it’s settings work before deciding my purchase.

Yes it does. In the same way it does on the Gen 3. The difference is the Gen 3 allows you to alter where the suspension is starting from in the first place (+8 to -8). On the Gen 4 you are stuck with what BMW have decided to give you.

ive obviously didnt get my head around this correctly from the start. i have the gen 3 and didnt realise it was semi active as the gen 4 is. thought the gen 3 was set as you set it and the gen 4 is semi active. also isnt it +7 to -7.
