Tbh, I was going to buy an 1198s track bike but reliability issues put me off a little. Iv had a few dukes over the years and not really had a problem with any of them. Just didnt want to risk it.

My S1000RR has been a pain In the bum pretty much from day 1. Sort of regret not buying a ZX10 if I'm honest . I'm sure once the problems are fixed, it will all be ok.

The 1198 seems to be fine until you add a QS then everything seems to go wrong. My gbox survived 1.5 race weekends after the QS was fitted. Had been OK before then but I'd always used the clutch for changes. Engine/box had been fully rebuilt before it went wrong.
Talking to a number of people the gbox is a real problem for the 1098/1198, time will tell whether pannigale is better. Have also heard bad stories about ZX10 gboxes as well as the blades.
I do know a few people that have been racing the BMW without gbox issues which is why I was going to get one.

Iv head that a good upgrade for the 1098/1198 was a Nova box. Expensive though.... I haven't heard of any probs with the ZX10. Maybe if I dig a little, ill find some problems. I guess this thing is you never hear of good stuff, always bad..

Iv got a few pals that have raced the S1000RR at national and club level. Some have had probs, some haven't. I guess it's luck of the draw. I'm pretty sure once I get the bike back, ill be fitting an HM shifter as the stock shift assist seems to be the cause of a lot of gearbox issues.

I'd been told the Nova box was the answer & know people that have gone that way. Recently been hearing that teams with Nova boxes replace them after every round.

Think you're right, decent QS & probably getting it set up on a rolling road would be the way to go.

Time for an update.

Bikes been at dealers for 6/7 weeks now. Gearbox problem has been identified and will be fixed. However because there was soo many meal shards on the sump plug (that are not from the gearbox) BMW technical have instructed the dealer to strip the engine down to see if there is any more problems/find where the metal shards have come from. It looks like a crank bearing has broken down or something.

Haven't been given a time as to when the bike will be back, but I guess it's going to take as long as it takes. I'm in no rush, just want it fixed. The dealer the bike is at has been great, constant updates on what's going on. Brilliant service :)

Glad to hear progress is being made dude, better to wait and get it all sorted now while winter is here. :)

Exactly. Worse case ill have to use the 600. Not the end of the world, actually can't wait to ride it lol

Update.

Engine is getting a full rebuild due to a manufacturing defect on the head. New head, pistons, shells, rods, cams etc etc.

Should have it back next week. Iv then got to run it in. I can't get insured on it, so it will be run in on the Dyno.

This bike has been a right ball ache from day one. Just glad that my local dealer has been able to get this sorted.

Hope this one gives you better fun than the last
They are great on their day , in fact their ******* brilliant :)

Cheers Bob. Tbh, Iv started to loose a little faith in the S1000. Literally from day 1 Iv had grief with it. Be it engine, gearbox, race body work.

Guess that 1198 isn't looking so unreliable now ;)

Exactly that. Wishing I'd bought something else if I'm being totally honest. However on the plus side, ill have a newly refreshed engine with completely new internals. Not looking forward to running it back in though.

Should be getting it back in the next couple of weeks at a guess.

Another update.

Been told today the cost of the engine rebuild will be more expensive than fitting an entirely new engine. So, that's what they will be doing, fitting a new engine. Just waiting for Ze Germans to say yes.

New engine getting delivered to the dealer for next Tuesday. Fitting will be that week too.

Happy days

The faulty engine will be sent back to Germany for the factory to investigate what happened etc. Iv been told this is a very rare thing to of happend. Hope so, as if it happens again, I'm likley to have a massive sense of humor failure..

Engine hasn't been deliverd yet. Iv been told next Tuesday then however long to fit it. It's coming up to 3 months being at the dealers.

Maybe ill have the bike back sometime in march, but who knows.

3 months thats nothing.lol...my mv was away for 8 months last year whilst motogb were fooking about with it.

for 3 months Id be boiling in my own piss by now , have you had a courtesy bike or anything like that ?
surely if its a 2012 its depreciated 3k over that time period ;)
