Hopper good news on a new box, I believe you only use your bike on the track? If so the standard gear shift assist may have coursed your problem as its not a real quick shifter, all the racers have upgraded it with a translogic system or similar system

The manual states it should not be used close to maximum rpm which I guess you do?

That's right mate. As soon as its back, I'm going to be putting an HM Shifter on it.

I'm struggling to get my head around this, shift assist? wheres the assist? If its not around max revs in any gear but lower in the rev range wheres the benefit? Might just as well do the ol normal flick of the wrist on changing gear. Why the f***s it on there? Have always used mine at the top end, road and track (ignorant thinking it was a quick shifter) so on that basis i best start saving for a new box ! :(

As long ssh you don't run into the rev limiter whilst using it you should be fine the standard engine produces peek power @12400 rpm so there is no point revving past there and the limiter cuts in @14500.

I believe the problems happen as the rev limiter start to stutter the engine and you try to use the shift assist it causes the gearbox to collide the gears as they are now all out of sync

Would a propper quickshifter stop thsi happening?

An aftermarket shifter like the HM is much more advanced than the stock shift assist (solid state etc), not to mention programmable to avoid mashing your gearbox.

I've had the same problem on another bike using a translogic shifter. Not sure any QS works well if you try & change when you hit the rev limiter.

Don't think the cogs can get out of sync as they are in constant mesh in a bike gearbox.

No quickshifter will work properly on the rev-limiter
.
The main problem with the OE shifter is it is microswitch operated as opposed to strain guage(no moving parts)
Some work fine whilst others, presumably, have wider tolerances and vibrate thereby confusing the ecu.

However, changing the quickshifter does not always cure the problem, there are occasionally other issues.

The biggest advantage in using an aftermarket shifter is the adjustability of kill time and lever sensitivity and,in most cases strain guage technology.

Baz knows his stuff... Ill go with that mate :)

Didn't know OEM QS was a microswitch. Will need to replace that. Last time I talked to translogic they didn't do a kit specifically for the S1000. Any other manufacturer do one that plugs straight in to the harness but can change the time?

Cordona Quickshifter from Moto46-plug and play with bespoke s1000rr loom, with the added advantage of being totally self contained with no connection to the bikes ecu. (Also easily transferred to your next bike, whatever the make).

HM Quickshifter Plus, just plugs onto the injectors on S1000, no connections to the ECU are needed (I have one for my bike) :)

Get the factory pro detent spring makes a big difference to gearbox gear changes ;)

And there are reports on the other forum that is has produced premature wear on some parts of the gearbox.

Popped in to my dealers yesterday. Work on the bike will start Monday morning. The head master tech will be undertaking all the work, had a real long chat with him, really knows his stuff.

They will be striping the box down and replacing anything that's has be damaged. They will also be changing the selector fork too. Been told this I now a services item and should be changed as a matter of course.
I was also told the WSB team replaces the selector fork after every outing on the bike bike, be it Practise, Qually, warm up or a race... Not sure how many I'll be going through over a year... Could get eye watering..

Anyway, I'm mega happy with the service of my local dealer, nothing is too much bother, they seem to really care about there customers and take a pride in they're work. Ill defiantly be buying my next S1000rr from them.

Is that all the selector forks in the gearbox? That sounds like serious problems if they need to be replaced after every race. Maybe BMW should have designed some stronger ones.

I know that's what initially causes problems in the Ducati gearboxes but didn't realise they were this much of an issue with BMW. I was looking to change to improve reliability not make it worse. Lol.
