Interesting that this appeared as i am due to get my bike serviced at the end of this month so I booked it into my local BMW dealer.

My bike has had it's PDI service, 600 mile, and then an annual one this time last year having done 3000 miles, the bike is a smidge over 5000 miles at the moment and so it's getting an annual.

What i found strange was that i got asked if the previous dealer had changed the brake fluid last year when it got serviced, naturally i didn't know so they rang the dealer and then rang me to say that the previous dealer couldn't confirm whether or not it got done (as it should be on it's first annual service) so naturally they want to do it on this service obviously adding more cost to it.

My first question to them was whether or not it was standard practice for a BMW dealership not to change the brake fluid and if it was also standard practice for them not to keep records of what has been done on a service, particularly if this dealership does (as they all should!) and given that the brake fluid is actually spotless and is showing no signs of discolouration whatsoever (it actually looks like it probably was changed this time last year with it only having done 2K miles) would it really get changed?

I was actually a bit miffed to hear that that they would have to change it to keep the warranty going (to be expected) but they had no explanation or idea as to why another BMW dealership would not have kept a record of what was done when it was serviced, or more importantly why they "assume" that other dealers do not service as per BMW's technical procedures and change the brake fluid when it is supposed to be done, thus ensuring the warranty remains intact.

I have to say it just smacks of trying to score another ?40 for the sake of it to me :D

Proposed cost of the annual service, including an air filter as they want to treat it like a 6000 service ?200-?240 (?240 with the brake fluid change).

Thankfully my warranty runs out in November as i'll stick to doing what i normally do and service them myself after that :)

HI

When I had my run in with my dealer over the 1st service not removing the limiter I spoke to BMW and they got all the paperwork and saw that it had not been completed on the check list, so you might want to contact them and see if they can help with records. They where even not happy with the girl on the service desk as said she should of seen that it was not checked of and quizzed the fitter.

You will have to find a way of resetting the service light this time next year. Mine came on the day before the service and was bloody bright and difficult to ignore.

Is this on a 2015?

Mine is in for service tomorrow with brake fluid change and the only thing I see on the display when I first turn the ignition key on is 'Service April 2016' then it disappears to show the normal display.

What prices should i be looking at for the BIG 18,000 mile Service. Full service plus the extra valve clearance checks. Anyone had it done recently?

had it done last October I think it was about ?750, but I had an electrical fault that needed fixing and they forgot to do fork oil which was done later FOC, so I think it ended up about ?650 inc the fix, also had loan bike gs 800 and s1000xr, so not too bad.

Just spoke to Bowker BMW at preston and they said its not checked for valve clearance or timing till 30,000 miles :S. He is phonning me back once he has confirmed this with the technician. They have a few newer S1000RR's in stock so i will be asking for a loan of one whilt mine is in for service.

pretty sure valve and timing check, plus new plugs are due at 18000, probably won't need adjusting (my old R1 was checked at 26 & 52000 and never had a shim!)

Spoke to Bowker BMW again and if everything needs doing then its at most going to cos ?630, the pads and brake fluid was changed earlier this year when i bought the bike so that can be deleted from the service to make it slightly cheaper. With regards the valve clearance check and timing it is checked at 18000 miles as it states every 30,000 kilometers

I fired off an email a couple of days ago to BMW UK who it has to be said were less than helpful, the answer I got back about my situation was that unfortunately whilst they are able to check which dealership carried out a service they are unable to tell me what work was carried out :D

I asked them in the email if it was common practice for one dealership to simply assume that a previous dealer would not have completed work that is required under a BMW warranty or technical schedule, they didn't even reply to that.

I am actually still contemplating if i am surprised or not by that response :D

So it would seem that a dealership can simply blag you into paying more by stating that a previous dealer potentially wouldn't have carried out the work, i wonder if i can wait until my service is done and then tell them that i don't believe they did it in which case void the bill :D

My 2nd service just been carried out with a brake fluid change. Noticed the front brake lever travel is considerably less now than before the service. Happy days....

Ive had this issue, i spoke to the BMW dealer that did my last service (before i bought the bike) and asked them what exact work was carried out so i know whether it needs to be done at my next service (due now). They too told me we can tell you it was serviced but not the exact work that was carried out, surely thats not right they should keep a record of whats been done?

The dealer will have to have kept the invoice for the work on their system. Ask for that?

I asked for that and Stephen is right, they dont keep the check sheet :O. i thought they would at least scan a copy of it onto the file of my bike for reference.

tbf we don't keep them either as they sometimes end up with oil marks on them. If they are clean we do offer them to the customer.. But we don't keep a copy.

The question I asked BMW in relation to this was should I assume or expect that a dealership would disregard their service schedule and not bother changing the brake fluid and if they shouldn't why should another dealership then assume that they might have?

In essence i was pushing for BMW to tell me that their dealerships should and would stick to the service schedule and do it by the book but because all the dealers are franchises they did not commit to it.

What is actually annoying me more is that the dealer i am taking the bike to, instantly assumed it would not have been done, I asked if they would have done it as a rule and was told yes, so why do they assume that another dealer wouldn't ?? :D

Do they itemise everything on the invoice? I don't think they keep the workshop tick sheet?

Every time I have had work done by a BMW dealer they provide an itemised invoice with all parts used, including fluids etc. It won't have the check sheet on it but it would have the brake fluid on it if some was used.

I got a workshop tick sheet from Preston, which says chain and tyre pressures altered.
