I've just enquired about my year 2 annual service with my local dealer; I'm told it's for oil and filter and a brake fluid change, I was also told it's down to have the recall work on the gear shift lever done...

Cost for service ?210?? :distress:

Just wanted to put it out there to see if this is a typical cost from BMW?

Hi,
Just asked the same thing at BMW Preston and was told £150 as not as much work as 1st service but needs brake fluid changed so maybe worth ringing about and playing one of against another.

What difference does the gear shift work make?

Cheers Dean, I'll give that a go. I take they were Southport Superbike?

How much is brake fluid ffs. Sounds a little steep to me...

In terms of cost - nothing as it's recall work if that's what you're asking. When I phoned I asked for a quote then they looked at my bike on their system via the VIN number and found it was one that needed this work done.

Gear Selector Recall

The recall relates to a replacement part (23 41 8 548 394) to ensure against failure and the inability to change gear if it becomes detached.

Had my gear changed at Manchester and tell the truth no difference at all, still goes in to neutral on clumsy down shifts😜 Think they may of just had a part fail on some batches.
And as for brake fluid FFS!!!!!! The bike had done 1800 miles the service is 6000miles or 1year from break in service, I told the service chap that I only changed mine on my GSXR once in 9 years and never one had a problem but it's the BMW way I guess.

Your probably quite lucky that you didn't have any issues with your GSXR, brake fluid should be replaced (or at the very least tested) every 2 years as it is hygroscopic (absorbs moisture) and too much water in the mix can cause brake fade under heavy brake usage.

TBH it probably didn't need doing at 1800 miles but I guess BM would rather do it and cover themselves in case of incident.

Do brake fluid yourself. Good tubing on the bleed nipple and other end in jam jar. Squeeze brake lever and loosen bleed valve. Close valve before lever touches bar, check resevoir still has fluid in then repeat. When fluid is near bottom of resevoir (emphasis on near NOT empty) top up with new. Keep going until until fluid changes colour then switch sides. Never let resevoir empty, and don't release lever before tightening valve or you'll get air in. 10-15 minute job. Always use good quality fluid.

Thats the prob, your not alowed to do your self as tied into the BMW servicing schedule, and if did start to get brake fade then would bleed them .
hate to see what will need doing next year when the milage is no where near the milage interval .

BMW Servicing

I change my brake fluid several times throughout a season and do quite a lot of work on the bike myself. My BMW dealership have never made comment or raised any issue with this approach. They are actually very supportive and offer technical advice whenever requested. My bike is serviced in accordance with BMW's servicing schedule. With regards to certain items, like oil and filter changes, they are more than content for me to do the work myself as they know that I change consumables far more regularly than prescribed in the manual.

Re: BMW Servicing

So has you bike been in for 2nd service and they never changed brake fluid . Also doing as many trackdays as you i would change my oil and fillter regularly is your dealer happy if you do that and still stamp your service book?

BMW Servicing

My bike is booked in for it's annual service in April. My BMW dealership acknowledge that they will not be needing to change the bike fluid as I will have already done it prior to the service and I use Castrol SRF which they don't stock. They are still happy to stamp the servicing schedule as they have physically seen the bike and connected it to the BMW system to perform any diagnostic work or software updates.

When my GSXR was recalled for a replacement of the front master cylinder, the dealer said the failures were due to missed brake fluid changes. As Stephen quite rightly said, the fluid is hygroscopic and will corrode the master cylinder internally which leads to hydrogen (bubbles).
