Nurburgring

HI all,
A mate and I are planning a trip to the Nurburgring, does any body know of a good route there.
That doesn't involve to meany motorways. I was thinking of going down the west side of France and cutting across in to Germany, any advice would be good thanks

Subscribing out of interest. We always go direct as we drive the van with the bikes in the back. It's difficult to find a better route with out spending a lot of time travelling that you usually want to spend at the Ring.

down to lille, valenciennes, mauberge phillipeville, Ciney, down to Spa, across the border Malmedy ring, takes 4-5 hours on bike free motorway Calais to lille then a/b roads.
if you have lots of time you can go via bolougne then n42 to st omer hazebrouk. worth looking on Michelin map for nice roads (green line trace)

I spent a 8 days in Belgium, Germany and France..... no real route there as such - however, there are loads of nice roads..... will try and get my mates TomTom PoI's and get them over to you....

Hi Blitz,

This is one of my routes that is a compromise on M/W, D/C/W and relatively good roads.

Calais A26 for 80 miles to J8, T/R D939 cambrai to roundabout T/R onto ring road D643 around Cambrai T/R onto D643 to le cateau, just after Le Cat T/L onto D959 to Landrecies onto D959 then D962 Avenses sur Helpe T/L onto N2 T/R onto D962 solre le chateau D962 and N596 to Beaumont.
N40 to Philippeville onto N97 towards Dinant Dual Carraigeway, at 1st Roundabout T/R D949 Leignon + T/L just before rail crossing onto D938 to N4, T/R onto N4 (for 10 miles) T/L N888 La Roche T/R N833 La Roche, When you see a Tank T/L.
At lights T/L onto N89 vielsalm, staright over lights at Vielsalm onto N675 to Poteau and T/R (easy to miss) N675 to A27/E42 and T/L onto E42 for approx 16 miles to 410 Prum / Gerolstein/Kelberg. T/L Mullenbach/ Nurburgring Or T/R onto 257 towards Ulmen and 259 Auderath and hotel & Petrol (next door).

I usually stay here http://www.hotel-wilhelmshoehe.de/en/welcome/welcome.html approx 20 mins good ride to the ring, good secure garage parking and Jackie (owner) is English and very helpful.

nice route, pretty similar to mine going through beumont - if you go via lille not A26 you don't need to bother with toll booths hassle.

willemshoe is good too.

we also use blau ecke in Adenau if you want to be in town

Yeah ive done the Lille/Mons route a few times and choose it if im in more of a rush or raining but that is 120 miles of M/W compared to 80 on A26.
I think im done with the Ring now.

Having a search around for info as we're going to the Nurburgring in June. We've booked accommodation and the tunnel but do you need to book passes for the Ring in advance or do you just rock up and pay there and then as such?

Purchase the tickets while you're there.

I would encourage you to study the web resources that Ben Lovejoy used to post about do's and don'ts and especially the 5 rules for motorcyclists. I haven't been for nearly 15 years myself, but back in the day we all loved it, I went there 4 times and always in cars - even rented a car from a major rental company too. If it is your first time, be aware the ring is a killer and on average 2 people per week die on the ring. If you manage the danger and ride within your limits, you'll have a great time. Also, I don't know if it has changed, but they don't let the bikes out until the Ring is dry and that they will check the noise output from your exhaust every time you go out, too loud and no go!

I just remembered watching the late great Sabine Schmidt hustling the sports bikes from my car when she got caught up behind them driving a BMW M5 Ring Taxi - a fast and hard racer who had a lovely smile and was always happy to meet you in the Pit area. Plan to spend time in the pit area as it is a great laugh with like-minded petrol heads and don't consider more than 3-4 laps per day as for me it was so mentally taxing and exhausting.

Also, look up the photographers who attend, they will shoot pictures of you which you can later buy and have framed. I have a couple whilst driving an Audi S8 and a Supra.

Accommodation, Blau Ecke in Adenau is a fabulous place to stay. My son and his mates used to rent houses nearby the ring on AirBnB which was cost effective too.

Also, as the French are getting absolutely **** hot on speeding fines at present, even on A roads, I collected a ?750 fine myself 4 years ago trying to set a land speed record having been clocked at 256kmh, consider getting into Belgium at your earliest opportunity and plot a route along some fab roads across to Spa Francochamps as it is 30 - 45 minutes from there to the Ring.

Thanks for the info MrSmooth, I'll have a look. We'll be taking the bikes over in the van so just going to take the most direct route. Accommodation and the tunnel is already booked so sorted for that. We'll have 2 full days at the Ring so hopefully no need to rush before leaving.
