Re: Chain & Sprockets

I have a D.I.D 520 ZVM-X chain fitted and I use a variety of Renthal sprockets in different sizes to alter gearing as my bike is only used on track.

So what's the advantage with 520, lightweight I guess? Ok so I've got renthal R4 chain and sprokets fitted to my bike and there even seems to be an issue with this. If you look at the back of the bike, there's a lot of side to side movement on the chain on the rear sprocket if you get me? Because of this silly wobbly carrier and this chain issue, the drive of the bike is terrible! I'm thinking on putting standard sprockets back on? I measured the rear renthal sprocket against the rear standard sproket and the renthal is slightly narrower :-/

RyS1000rr, what kind of chain and sprokets you using? Just standard? I'm worried about my bike needing bushes for the swingarm, there's Deffo play there that shouldn't be follow by this creaking type noise. Def going in past John Clark BMW today / this afternoon so hopefully they will understand what it needs. Just thinking, I suppose the harsh roads in Aberdeen has caused this, along with front up in the air a lot won't help too huh? Lol

Just had a look at my bike which is running std wheels, no play, creaking or anything else (5k miles & 18 months in) so its certainly not a characteristic of the bike! It must be frustrating for you but the dealer should / must be able to sort particularly as it's still under warranty. Maybe you have particularly harsh roads up there, maybe you're riding it like you stole it, but unless you're abusing it I can't see why you should be having these issues at such a relatively low mileage.

Sorry to throw a spanner into the mix here, you guys who appear to be having weird problems with sprockets and swing arm bearings are riding bikes you bought second hand, not from new, right? These are not problems anyone else to my knowledge has experienced (and we get every possible 'fault' discussed including heated grips not being hot enough lol) which would suggest that your issues are the exception rather than the rule.

Did you buy them from BMW dealerships as approved used or from independents? Did the bikes come with factory fitted options only or had they been modified before you got them?

What history do the bikes have? Were they used for track duties or raced before you got them? Clean bill of health from the DVLA?

We have at least one member on here who had a new '15 plate bike with a load of issues from new that he eventually got swapped for a new bike, so the 'bad' bike would have gone on to a second owner, who undoubtedly would never have known about the history. Just sayin'....

My bike was fire new dude! I can only report the faults I'm having with the bike. Only issues in a nutshell is the wobbly sprocket carrier / wheel bearings - yet although There is too much free play between bearings and spindle. My bike came with Motorsport colours / performance pack and the antitheft alarm. Bought from a BMW motorrad dealer. The history my bike has had before I got it was it went through the production line lol. Nae going to lie I've thrashed the tits off it, but that's what it's built to do? I keep it well maintained and the whole bike is spotless, I mean extremely clean! BMW say the roads up in Aberdeen are rubbish which they are but my r1 and ninja took it all day long lol!

Dont get me wrong I'm hooked on these beemers. If anything this bike I have is gettin used as a track hack next year and I'll buy another brand new one with forged wheels this time :)

Theres a a time and a place lol but course I'm riding it like I stole it! Honestly my r1 took abuse for 20k miles and never chewed Cush rubbers or swingarm bearings. Granted it had slightly less HP than the bimmer. It's also virtually impossible not to wheelie the BMW all the time lol mine gets run in slick mode only unless it's raining! ;-D

Thanks for the info. I reread your posts and I must apologise for asking what you had already stated about owning the bike from new and its usage, I am a numpty. The dealer should be all over those issues and getting them fixed under warranty.

Cheers guys. Yeah hopefully I get it all sorted out. I'll Deffo keep you guys posted. Don't get me wrong I love this bike!! One day I'll post something good about it, haha. Good having this forum for people to discuss matters like this!

2015 warranty update!

Hi guys, some of you's may seen I had issues with wheel bearings / sprocket carrier play etc. Bike went in again today and turns out it requires wheel bearings and possibly a new wheel spindle, also the swingarm bearings / bushes are totally goosed as there is lots of free play in the actual swingarm itself. So they are replacing all the bushes / bearings etc. Special BMW tooling has been ordered for this too.

im just curious as to why only mine requires the swingarm bearings :-/ I'm a tad weary. Hopefully the mechanics get it sorted and that but as you can imagine new bike and all :-(

cheers, Dave

Things happen.
It might be frustrating but its what the warranty is for isn't it?

I was wondering if all the problems are related to something simple like the bike alignment from factory? Is that possible?

Suppose it could be bud? Doesn't look like a cut and shut though haha. Nah I'm not sure really to be honest. I do know it's not a 2 minute job to change out bushes and the bearings. Hopefully this will be a long term permanent fix. What I was thinking was, I probably need to adjust my suspension to suit my weight too?

Just an update guys. Bikes back and all fixed, I'm so happy :))
wish i could say the same for mine! ....mine's back after new wheel bearings front and rear, new cush drive rubbers and new rear wheel sensor but TC still turning itself off randomly! ....it's been in 5 times now to fix this but still faulty.....i've had enough...the bike has been back to the dealer with all sorts of issues over the last year ....i've lost faith in it....want my money back :(

Hi Cavey. Ah not so good to hear!! So - does the TC light come on from time to time and just stays on? It's hard going through issues that can't be resolved but try per severe. Who's your local motorrad dealer?
