Hi guys last week when riding home from work my bike started to make a rattling/knocking noise, at first I was like ****! panic but after a bit of digging about the bike I found the noise was coming from the tank.
so last night I removed the tank and the filler cap/neck and here's what I found.

now the bit that's making the noise is the metal pendulum thing, anyone had this problem? anyone know what the thing is? , to me it looks like some kind of valve that attaches to a breather hose, the question is do I need it or can I just rip the bugger off cause the noise is doing my head In!

Cheers David

Yea it closes the tank overflow pipe so you can fuel up with the bike upright and it won't leak over when you put the bike on its side stand. Really good idea imo. I've never had a noisy one though. Are you sure it's that?

some man Stephen! a new you'd come to the rescue! yeah it's defo making the noise 100% , what I don't get is why it's started making a noise? there's a wee piston and some washers that look worn? it's really loose too flaps about like mad, I never fill my bike in the upright position so would it be ok to remove the bugger?

Yea I don't see why not... It looks like you can't buy them separately anyway so it's probably the best option.. There pretty loose to begin with..

cheers Stephen , it's there mabey another part missing ? a stopper or somthing to stop it rattling about , couldn't see anything in the bottom of the tank , and I can't find a diagram but I did see a pic online that looked had a red tube running down the side , could be wrong though

thanks for posting! i always wondered what that noise was, i only notice when putting on and off the paddock stand & when cleaning it, slight side to side rocking makes it rattle...worried it was a loose piece of something...phew

No it all looks to be there.. I would just be careful removing it incase you need to refit it at a later date. Otherwise it's ?45 for a replacement filler cap base

at least I am not the only one having an issue! lol, the only thing with mine is its making a constant noise when I am riding.....

well back to square one guys put the bike back together and it's still make the boody noise! all I can compare it to is like having a card stuck in your pushbike spokes as a kid? nothing in the tank nothing in the air box?? the noise is only present when the bike is moving , noise speeds up and slows with the bike , I am hoping it's not the engine but the noise doesn't happen with the bike at a stand still clutch in and me running it through the revs ? frustrating, going to have to pull it apart again tonight me thinks

Have you ruled out the wheels by rotating them by hand when up on jacks?
Does it change frequency with revs?

I haven't alex , I will give this a try for sure , possibly wheel bearings ? not with revs just by motion faster I go faster noise gets?

I haven't soof , but it's a brand new set and they seem spot on , the problem is the noise is coming from under the tank/airbox area? when I am rolling along and put my hand on the tank cover I can feel some kind of knocking/vibration? wonder if it's a worn front wheel bearing , vibration traveling up forks onto head stock through bike? will check out all of the above tonight and report back.
cheers guys

I didn't think it was that tbh.
Does the noise increase with the speed of the bike? Does it continue even while coasting with the clutch in? And does it continue under gradual braking?

Might be the yoke bearings like Soof had recently...

It doesn't sound like the same symptoms as loose steering head

No, I've no idea what it is yet haha. Just ruled out a few options :)

Is it a uniform noise or is it random? What I mean by that is does it sound like it's in correlation to the wheels rotating or is it more from the bike moving maybe something is rattling around loose?

I'd lift the wheels off the floor like Alex suggested and see if you can simulate it in the garage.
