Hi All

Not an ideal first post on here....i have recently bought a BMW S1000RR M 2020 (6k mileage, paid 14k gbp) and am now looking for insurance quotes - i had checked out the insurance threads here & elsewhere so am aware of rates going up - but not seen anyone having trouble getting a quote or a reasonable quote, so i didnt see this as being an issue. i have not ridden for for 7 years, but had ridden 3 years around UK & Europe with UK insurance previously with no issues).

I have tried comparison sites, individual brokers, spoken direct and i am either getting:
  • no quotes
  • >£5k per annum (full comp or 3.5k 3rd party fire/theft)
The reasons given over the phone are never definitive, but they suggest it could be:
  1. driveway overnight storage
  2. motorbike type, model
So re overnight storage - it will be in a gated secure car park for the apartment block i am in; all residents are registered to an allotted space, no access by public; but no underwriters account for this, they classify it as a driveway. i have not had any issues with insurance before, and currently have car insurance; aged 50; live in Bucks.

I have tried bennetts, mcn, devitt, bikesure as well as multiple comparison sites. same issue.

As they are not given me clear reasons - apart from 'the quote is based on details provided' , i am a bit lost as to what the next steps are. I cannot even get temporary cover to pick the bike up. So, do i have to now sell this bike due to this.....

Sorry for a negative post.

Thks.

thanks for inputs.

yes, can use family garage - this gets quote down to £2.5k pa for fully comp.

will call bemoto on monday (offices closed now). bemoto website shows expected premiums - albeit 2 years old, and if i keep in locked garage the significant different in circumstances i can see is no claims of 4 years (i have none for a bike; 4 for a car fwiw). postcode perhaps also, and currency.

hopefully they can produce rabbits!

I live in a block of flats with secure underground parking in C. London.

I spoke to BeMoto previously and they put it down as a type of garage. It was ok but that was before they lost Axa as the underwriter.

I've subsequently moved it to a much safer place and registered it there. Weirdly, if your payment card isn't registered to the same address as the bike they throw a fit. Its like people cannot possibly have 2 addressess.

I would discuss if you can improve things with ground anchors, steel storage units etc

No claims on any other policy is irrelevant - it's a kind of discount that can only apply to one policy and you cannot transfer car NCB to a bike policy. You can't even use it on a second bike policy concurrent with the first one.

when I bought my GS in 2023 BeMoto matches the no claims discount from my RR policy. Even though that policy was with another insurer. I’d never heard of that before.

Hi...why does every application ask for no claims on a car?

Good points by others - I have recently moved and wondering whether addresses not in full sync is causing an issue.

I'm not sure what the phrasing is, but they are likely enquiring about the existence of any car claims. Most companies hold any car claims, but I did find some that don't. Again, whilst they may phrase it that way, the level of NCB is not applicable to any other policy.

Insurance is a PITA at the moment. A couple of other places to try is The Bike Insurer website and also Hastings Direct motorbike insurance website. I had to move to them recently after BeMoto/Axa pulled out of underwriting.

Also, another thing to check is the definition of where you are parking your bike overnight (they have the various options and definitions on the website when you are at that stage) - i would say you would fall into "Locked compound" rather than driveway.

Hope you get something sorted! best of luck

I think it's a combo of factors really, with the no NCB, the break from riding and no garage. That £2.5k quote is probably not too bad considering the circumstances. Seems a lot of the sites are now asking for specific details of bikes you have ridden before or are currently insured.

I was speaking to a couple of dealers on Friday (massive discounts on 2024 RRs at the moment!!) and they have had multiple people put deposits down on bikes, only to pull out as they can't get insurance so you are not alone.

This has been a noticeable issue since 2023, people pulling out of deals. When I was shopping for a 2023 bike, I was constantly asked if I had checked if I could get cover. The only reason offered by insurance company was because of the high theft rate.

Agree probably a combo of factors.

Wow I didn't know this was common issue. My dealer didn't say anything about this, and I think i only saw one thread out of many insurance related which OP had similar issue. After speaking to dealer again he was a bit non plussed and said it shouldn't be a problem to insure.

Reckon one year of no claims will drop insurance significantly if I am paying 2.5k?

Will try out other insurers you guys have suggested. Thanks again for inputs.

occupation - hmm, someone on same thread says company director is low risk - i am a director of limited company so will use that; i was putting down my actual skillset (what i do daily) as my job role before.

this guy had same issue back in 2021; so looking more likely will have to bite the bullet for a year...

Perennial issue. London is much worse, it’s almost impossible to get insurance on a BMW if it’s not in a locked garage because I was told by bmw 50% of new ones are stolen in first year.

I register and insure all my bikes at my second home in Somerset with Carole Nash in a locked garage - no problem with two addresses. But I only insure 2 road bikes not the RR which is track only. Also I take the highest excess. Half my bikes are historic which have v low premiums, that doesn’t help you.

The one thing I didn’t pick up form the thread was motoring convictions - obvs they will load the premium.

A mate in London couldn’t insure his second bike and had to sell it. He built a lock up in his front drive for his GS - not a full garage, a steel unit. Might be worth considering.

The other tip - never make any claims unless for catastrophic loss. Not worth it in current environment.

They usually ask if the garage is of brick construction. Not sure what they will say to steel unit.
