Tank Extender

They are useful on track and allow you to grip the tank more when you are hanging off which aids control. You see them being used on a lot of race bikes.

As Ryan says, can help you feel more secure when lent over and when braking.

Have a look at the Pata Yamaha's in WSBK they use extreme versions.

I use one on the Panigale to shift weight backwards. Loads of racebike Panigales were having mid corner low sides when letting off the throttle and the extender pretty much stopped these over night. The BMW doesn't have that issue but everyone has said they work best off the rear wheel so I can imagine it being worth trying for that as well as the mentioned stability when hanging off.

Asked for some more pictures of it. Looks like it's a well thought out creation with an inner and outer piece.
