So the bike service light has just come on. If I service myself, does it affect the warranty? or can I buy the parts / service kit and take to FWR for example?

My understanding is that provided BMW parts are used it can be serviced by an independent workshop without affecting the warranty (and they can stamp the service book). If you do it yourself wih BMW parts you might end up having to argue about warranty repair but if you had receipts for parts/oil etc I think you would have a reasonable case. With an older bike, they might argue that you had missed checking a wearing part that then failed.
Servicing by FWR should be fine.

The missing part is that the independent workshop has to be VAT registered if I'm not mistaken. So you can't do it yourself and say you're an indy.
