As I don't ride flat out (anywhere) at my age and with a high level of self preservation, would you say there is much difference between any version of the S1000RR when only riding at say 75%. Is a Gen1 in Rain mode much difference from a 2024 bike, in rain mode ? Or is it time for me to buy an S1000R ?

Forgot to add currently I'm riding a last Gen3 K46

Even 75% is still fast on the road. Any post-2004 litre bike is quick, but as long as you're still finding it comfortable riding I don't see a need to swap. At least the RR has some weather protection with the fairing.

I suspect the main difference will be in the electronics and rider aids. I have a 22 RR and borrowing the dealer 24RR there was not a lot in it and certainly not enough to justify the cost of upgrading. But, you would easily feel the difference between a pre and post 2019 model at any level. That said, anything above 50%on the road is certifiable - prison food or pine box. So, if your yardstick is a pre-K67 then go for it as the rider aids are arse saving at 5% if you mess up, let alone 75%.

My only comment is the amount of wind resistance on yourself between the the R and RR. For example, on dual carriage ways and motorways.

I've had a 13, 22 and now a 24, each generation was a bit better than the last. Borrowed a R when my RR was in for a service once, and it felt a bit flat and cheap. Considered a M1000R last time but all the bling makes it too expensive IMO.

It’s mainly the midrange that has improved greatly over each gen. The shiftcam made the biggest difference. So I’d keep the Gen3 as it’s still very usable. J

The gen 3 is the ugliest S1000RR, I'd have to open the garage door with my eyes shut if I owned one.

No. You obviously don't understand the proverb.

I've stumped up the money for 3 brand new S1000RR's, so obviously I like them. Though my Ducati Panigale 1299 S was a much better looking bike. But when I was 19 my Kawasaki Z1R 1000 and Honda CBX 1000 were closer to beauty to my young eyes.

These bikes - even my Gen 2 2013- simply cannot be exploited on the road, even at 75%. They’re designed for the track and that’s where I use them, especially at my age (69). I have other bikes for the road which don’t beckon the grave or prison, as someone said. A few years ago I slapped on some slicks and tore off the lights and use it for what it’s best at. And there, it’s utterly sublime.
Looks? Please. I’ve got vintage bikes for that. Though they do have an undeniable muscular beauty.

The Nurburgring, the Autobahn or the Isle of Man to name 3 aren't tracks. And 75% of the first 4 gears aren't unexploitable at the right time and place for some people. It's the same tired old opinion that mid range tyres are all anyone can use on the road.
