I'm planning on using this socket to power my phone mounted to the yoke stem (as my GPS for long runs) - does anyone know at what current the CAN Bus controller shuts it down? Safe to pull 1A or so from it?

I did some Googling - lots of mentions of BMW CAN Bus shutting down at 5A total draw on aux circuits (at least on the GS and XR).

Assuming same for RR, means that a usb charger or GPS (e.g. 1A 12V draw for a nice fast 2000mA 5V usb charger) would be fine direct from the socket.

If you are connecting several things though (like some in the thread with cameras etc), or big current things (like heated gear) - then I'd say that you'd be better off with a relay.

i enquired about this plug today at BMW when i picked my s1krr up and the technicians suggestion was to use the sidelight live as a feed.

have you had anymore thoughts on making a relay loom Stephen?

FWIW- I've ordered 2x Digitek Moto's. As they are small and therefore easier to charge. I have an Anker 20,000MaH battery for keeping the phone alive, as that can sit in the tank bag whilst the phone is on a RAM Mount. That battery can charge an iPhone 4x or more, and doesn't weigh much.

Yea I've ordered some parts today, its a new supplier so it may take a while. I'll make a post here once I've made a prototype.

i think you'll be pleased with them Alex, they are easy to fix and small enough to conceal. have lights inside to show they're working etc. i'll be fitting mine back at the head stock somewhere for phone/gopro/helemt charging

the repair plug came today and its soldered and heat shrunk to the TomTom lead.

I'll fit it this weekend and let you know how it works

So after plugging it in, ignition on and bike running this power outlet doesn't work for me! nothing.

i'll double check my soldering before i give up but it looks like it'll be battery or sidelights for the tom-tom

small update.

After a little help from Stephen i now have this working successfully.

the instructional i read on the web didn't work on mine. it ended up being Pin 1 was the 12v +ve and 2 was the -ve pin 3 seems to be variable voltage.

final step will be to ride with it on and working to check the voltage doesn't vary on pin 1 as some other forums and post have suggested these wire can.

Thanks again Stephen

Managed to get around to fitting my USB supply today, and found out that 2015+ bikes have two sockets that fit the BMW plug.

There is the socket in the right hand fairing panel already mentioned that is on the earlier bikes too, apparently for the GPS lap timer, that seems to give some people issues using for power.

Then there are two sockets in the same place but in the left hand fairing panel - one I assume is for the front suspension travel sensor (which the BMW plug does not fit) and another which gives out switched power which I am now using.

The one in the left hand fairing panel uses pins 1&3 for power, and comes on and off with the numberplate light, which is the one I have used to power my USB and so far seems a good source.

If anyone knows what else the extra left hand connector is supposed to be for, let me know!

Accessory Plug

According to the Owner's Manual its only use is for connecting the 2D potentiometer.

Re: Accessory Plug

Hi Ry, there are two plugs in the left fairing, 1 that looks like it is for the 2D, and a second that fits the accessory cable.

The US s1k site mentions this is an accessory socket, and seems to work, but wondered if there was a third thing you could add to the front (lap timer, 2d, and this)

Accessory Plugs

Any lap timing equipment (2D GPS Laptrigger or HP IR Receiver) plugs into the socket underneath the right fairing. The Owner's Manual (pp. 136-137) doesn't specify any other use except for the 2D potentiometer. You are definitely using the correct socket for the power supply though. I currently have a 2D GPS Laptrigger connected to the plug underneath the right fairing and a 2D Front Fork Travel Sensor connected to the plug under the left fairing.

Cant help answer your question RPM but can confirm as of today that might is functioning perfectly as you would want it to
