Nice one Alex. Thanks for that, what year is yours?

Edit: that's the left, right? 😉

2nd edit: I meant right!

2012 RHS (as you sit on the bike) It's just above the radiator.
I want to jack the iPhone into this now if I can get the cap off and check there are pins under there.

I also have to add dual USB ports to the rear as I intend a little fun with mounting my 2 Drift Ghost-S's and have them record on loop.
Wonder if all these taps will feck off the canbus.

From the various posts I've read on this it just craps out and stops working if it doesn't like what's going on.

What does record on loop mean Alex?

As I understand it the Ghost-S will record continuously (overwriting the oldest footage) with a continuous power feed - just like a dash cam. So with a 32Gb car on 960p I can record ~12hrs of footage without pressing a button. I can always stop and download the footage instead of over-writing it. Depends on the scenario - I figure it's enough for most touring days/track days.

I want to mount one on each pillion peg (secure yet easy to remove) to push them wide of the bike. One facing forwards and one backwards...should be good for footage I can splice together later.

So I need 2x Micro USB feeds from inside the bike out to the pegs...if the pegs don't work I'll just secure the camera mounts to the non-OEM parts of the bodywork.

I intend to use something like this to get power from the battery. http://shop.touratech.co.uk/dual-us...v-for-22-mm-25-mm-handlebar.html#!prettyPhoto
I need to decide whether to tap the power from the accessory port or the feed things like the Bazzaz instructions say to use.

Ahh that's good - I need about 3x 2.1amp usb outlets in all...and some shorter cables too!

Thats right. The canbus will stop giving power to a socket if it doesn't like what going on. As I have said earlier, it is a pain in the arse. I have a continuous record cam on my GS and originally used the accessory socket which is powered by the canbus. I thought the cam was faulty because I was often missing large chunks of recording, but no, it was the bike canbus deciding to randomly shut the socket down until the bike was restarted. The cam was pulling 5v which is within tolerances.

Ant, the link you put up to the digitek looks like a good option for usb powered devices. The post about a bike catching fire, I just can't see how that could happen because the canbus stops power to anything that is drawing more than it wants to give and would get nowhere near the kind of scenario to cause a flame to start, sounds to me more like a loom issue.

Alex - I would recommend you do not use the canbus socket for powering your cams for the reason explained above.

BTW - the canbus port is not the accessory port in BMW lingo, it is a canbus socket. The accessory socket is a din socket on other models. Both are run off the canbus but the connections are completely different, one is the standard din, the other is the plastic pin setup.

Thanks - will have another go tomorrow. I'll take a knife :D

From memory the cap has a tiny clip fixing it to the socket the same way as the indicator plugs do. Should just be black electrical tape around the connector.

I've just had a look at my bike, there is a live with ignition wire at the plug block for the alarm, you could tap into that for your accessories. It should be green w/white.

Thanks Stephen. Guess it depends which type of connector I go for now.
I've asked Digitek if they can do a custom solution first.

i had the dig tech running from the battery up to the headstock and attached behind the ignition barrel on the GSXR for easy access and it was small and discreet. i did look at the USB socket solution but stumbled across the Digitek while looking at thought it was a better solution for me, and it was..

As for the Canbus plug, for the 15 quid i think its worth a shot and see if it works. if not then ill seek out the wire you mentioned Stephen and go that route

There's also an optimate solution. Basically the same as the digitech and will switch off below 12.4v. This, unsurprisingly, will plug into the optimate cable that is left connected to the battery. Think that's the way I'm going. I think it's a fiver cheaper than the digitech as well.

I'm planning on using this socket to power my phone mounted to the yoke stem (as my GPS for long runs) - does anyone know at what current the CAN Bus controller shuts it down? Safe to pull 1A or so from it?

You should be able to get this plug a bit cheaper from BMW direct or from some other online places too - search for BMW part number 83300413585 :)

I believe the Optimate is only a 1A output which can really only maintain and not charge a device.

Hey Guys,

I've been thinking about this thread and I wonder if there is a gap in the market for a simple 'plug n play' can bus safe live with ignition power source for the s1000rr?

I could make something that fits the bill using 'BMW' plug connectors with a 40A relay to separate the current draw of any accessories from the can bus system, no cutting of wires on your bike, no soldering, just plug it in - connect it to your battery + terminal and you're ready to go.. The idea that I have so far would work on every can bus BMW and would be safe to run cameras, heated clothing, sat nav ect simultaneously.

Any thoughts? Would anybody be interested?

I could also make those for less than ?15 if theres a market for it...

Sounds like a good idea to me Stephen and i can almost see an eBay add for it now

id happily put my name down for one if you decide to do it or as a one off
