This is part one of the answer, I have asked for clarification on the fwd and rear limits as well.

In relation to your specific query, I can confirm that I have obtained the below from AG that states the maximum defection allowable in the rear sprocket carrier, to confirm, if pulled with a defined force of 25Nm in a lateral direction (as shown by the arrows) with the wheel installed in the motorcycle, a total of 1.3mm deflection is allowed

At least I now know when the dealer should be replacing the components. My new carrier/cush/spacer after 160 miles has 1mm of lateral play so I will see how it pans out, it may never get worse but I doubt it!.

Not sure whether that inspires any confidence or not?

Agreed, I think that eventually a recall may be issued for certain models of bikes, to be honest if its just the cushdive rubbers and not the bearing then just shimming the rubbers would help.

I know of some people who wrap the cush drive rubbers in ptfe tape to reduce the free play.:motorcyclesmilie:

Yep that would work, I have finally manage to arrange a one on one with BM technical ( not dealer techs) and I hope to finally get an answer one way or another backed up in writing so i can start to enjoy this bavarian monster :) if I had the three year warranty afforded to our American friends I wouldn't give a rats ass! Three years then shim the bu** er :)

Finally got to speak with a BMW technical manager and after being a bit understandably defensive he listened to the whole story and agreed with me that my particular bike and how the sprocket carrier fits is not right. He is looking into why and will sort it out one way or another. Woohoo I am a happy man.

Beamish, how did this end for you? I took my back tyre off yesterday and when everything fell off as soon as I'd pulled the tyre out another lad came over and looked at my wheel. He said straight away that the was too much play in the cush. As my 2012 bike (4500 miles) is due its first annual service, I am going to ask them to look at it when it goes in.

Cheers

Hi rick

I had the same problem as beamish but mine was not as bad
but they replaced my Cush drive rubbers and sprocket carrier as
the service desk said they had been changed by new part numbers
I did have to fight them as they said the play was slight but I pointed out
that the 3 in there showroom inc there demo bike had no play

Cheers

Hello Beamish, was there any outcome on this? I appreciate this post is old but any feedback would be ideal, I'm needing someone who I can relate this issue with. Thanks
