Success with some luck thrown in. This may help others.

The switch I got from Lee @ MTR looked identical, for whatever reason the internal multiplug is a different shape. So I decided to dismantle everything, clean, lubricate and reassemble...bingo.. works fine now...

I think the problem was the spring loaded latch (white) which engages with the switch body...
