So I dropped the oil out the bike today and am going to have the oil analysed as the plug was covered in a silver oily type grease and engine shavings see photos

What is that silver oily grease on the tissue that came from the plug?

I don't like the look of it.

Decided to use the 300V for tuning the bike and some ride outs for a couple of months then change oil and filter back to oem.

Ah cool, sorry forgot to reply to your PM.

sounds like a good idea to use it in a short cycle to help flush out contamination. Its cleaning properties will help.

The sump plug is dirtier that you'd want but I don't think its indicative of anything bad.

Pretty normal on that plug, as Rob says the magnets just picking up swarf and doing exactly what it's meant to do, the fragments are really minute slivers and particles, if you wipe it off the magnet it's like a paste if you rub it between your fingers.

Got timed out there looking back at the pics... was going to add.. I've had worse than that on that 1st Gen1 10R I owned... there was a bit of gear attached to the magnet when I done an oil change.... what you see is perfectly normal imo..

Engine Oil

It looks completely normal, especially if you last changed the oil a year ago.

I?m bored with packing, so while we?re on the subject of oil, I thought I?d answer a question I get asked fairly often for the non tech people out there.... What does the numbers in oil mean.
Simply the ?W? means winter and the two numbers are the two grades or viscosities of oil mixed together. This enables the oil to be thinner when cold and not break down to a watery consistency when hot. The red line shows the actual viscosity of the two mixed together.

So with 5W40 it?ll be more of a staight line..... but if you?re riding in Dubai for example you?ll want to run 15W50 so the oil doesn?t get too thin. BMW tend not to give alternatives for different regions i.e 5W40 across the world, like most tyre manufacturers give the universal 36/42 for tyre pressures so you can get some heat into the tyres on a winters day and we all know a set of Corsa?s will destoy themselves at those pressures in the mountains on a hot day. Yet Ducati tend to treat their customers as intelligent and they are long time owners who do alot of they?re own maintenance. So they give various oil recomendations based on regions. (Pic). Nothing wrong there with BMW, they are just covering their arses.
Now Trackdays/Racing is a different matter. If you?ve mechanically tuned your engine, thinner oil will be better becuser most of your clearances in a tuned engine will be alot closer and your need immediate flow. Plus we?ve all raced/trackdayed in the lovely tropical of snowy Cadwell in March/April! ;)
Now on a seperate matter oil quality is completely seperate issue. Motul 300V is expensive mostly due to quality not the fact it?s 5W40. Loads of R&D....It?s the bollocks but like the best brake fluid, it needs to be changed much more frequently. If your not running BSB pace, personally I run 10W40 Shell. If you have your oil analysed it shows the wear / any problems. (Pic). As ever it?s down to budget. I?ve stripped totally abused engines that have done way north of 50K miles and they are generally pristine.
As certain manufacturer I worked for were sponsored by a respected oil manufacturer and their oil never came near the bikes at World level. By agreement after a load of grenading, they only delivered empty barrels which we filled with Shell. Funnily when anothe oil manufacturer took over the same happend. Only shell for nearly 10 years.
