Trackday

Those times came from my 2D GPS Laptrigger after it finally 'found' the Start/Finish line. In comparison I thought my pace was rather slow after spending a session with one of the No Limits Instructors to learn the circuit. Granted he was using Metzeler slicks but his circuit knowledge was brilliant and he was easily several seconds faster!

That points to either the track layout being different or the laptrigger getting it wrong. I thought it must've been a typo TBH or your real name is Rossi lol.

I suspect it was probably the 2D dataset that's stored in the Laptrigger. Either way the laptimes displayed on the dash were certainly consistent which is good thing. For how short the circuit is, it is surprisingly difficult to learn and get right. I would certainly go back there again but there are other tracks, UK and European, that I plan to take the BMW to this season.

Metzeler Racetec RR

Ahh I see, makes sense - I'll try those warm temps if it's cold next time I'm out...though I think it's more likely to be wet :/

You may find these useful...

Metzeler Racetec RR (K1, K2, K3) tyre pressure ranges recommended and supplied by Metzeler Moto UK.

Front: 29-32 psi Cold / 30-35 psi Hot
Rear: 23-26 psi Cold / 25-28 psi Hot
Tyre Warmers: 50 mins @ 80?C

Well that's cleared that up and hopefully it means that the stored Start/Finish line data within the 2D GPS Laptrigger is accurate.

alpha Racing

My alpha Racing track fairings have been shipped from Germany today. Hopefully they should arrive at Prime Factors Racing sometime next week and then be with me shortly thereafter. Having to strip the BMW down again will also mean that I can finally fit the remaining parts from my winter order. Updates to follow...

More time on track yesterday...

Trackday

More time on track earlier this week with an evening trackday at Snetterton. Conditions were fairly damp for the first session following quite a bit of rain earlier in the day. However, by the second and final sessions the track had dried out sufficiently with only the odd wet patch and small pools of water off line around the circuit. With most people being put off by the bad weather during the day there were only twenty people at the most circulating in the Fast Group. Given the circuit length this meant that there was loads of space out on track. The BMW also passed MSV static noise testing without issue despite the baffle not being fitted to the Akrapovič HP race system.

DDC suspension changes were made to both front compression and rebound as compared to my last outing on track the surface at Snetterton is incredibly smooth with only one noticeable change in tarmac at Turn 9. That and the changes were required to take into account the much heavier braking areas around the circuit especially at the end of the back straight. I chose not to make any changes to the rear as looking at the even tyre wear after the first session none were required.

Compared to Rockingham the Snetterton circuit is completely different and provides further opportunity to identify what differences the HP Race Power Kit and HP Racing Data Release have made. With Snetterton's mixture of fast and slow corners the bike certainly benefited from the increased midrange and reduced engine braking on corner entry. Unlike before I could use 5th and 6th gear on the straights and in Slick mode the bike pulls even harder than it did before with the HP mapping installed in the now unlocked Race ECU.

I'm still in awe of the Metzeler Racetec RRs and will be sticking with them for the entire season; albeit on softer K1 and K2 race compounds. Tyre wear also remains consistent across the entire profile of both the front and rear tyres. This is a good indication that my current suspension setup is working well.

My brake pads are now in need of replacement having reached their wear limits so this will be done as a priority. This trackday should now mark the last time my BMW is on circuit in its current guise as my alpha Racing fairings should arrive shortly via Prime Factors Racing. Once those are fitted, along with the last few alpha Racing parts, I can then really start to push and begin thinking about achieving faster lap times.

Annual Service

After a very wet ride at the weekend the annual service has now been completed and the BMW now has fresh oil and a new filter. The brake fluid has also been changed but I've opted for Castrol React SRF Racing brake fluid which is far better suited for track use. Other than that there were no issues whatsoever with the BMW.

Re: BMW HP Race Datalogger

Hi, I'm new here. Just acquired a 2016 RR sport. Lots of the bits from my old 2011 RR fit on the new bike for track days. However the data logger I have seems to have different connectors. Is there an adaptor or is it a complete new piece of hardware?

Ta.

BMW HP Race Datalogger

Everything you need to connect the HP Race Datalogger is supplied in the box along with instructions on how to fit it. Instructions for fitting can also be found in the 2015/16 Owner's Manual on pp. 137-138 and it should simply plug straight into the socket found under the rear cowl.

Re: BMW HP Race Datalogger

Thanks. will try again tomorrow. Have lost instructions so will look in owners manual. Donnington on 19th, cant wait.
