Just nicely back from 3 days in Brno where I hired the 2019 S1000rr M performance bike with the new to this year RSE school.
Immediate impression and confirmed over the 3 days is that this bike is not fit for purpose and I am genuinely shocked that BMW have not pulled the plug on these bikes being hired out.....not a good advert for their product.
been on 3 previous events with basically the same organisation and always ultra safe for track time but was riding their older model S1000rr or my own ZX10r. This event must have had 10+ crashes and for only 30 riders over a max of 15 sessions over the 3 days. Spoke to another rider who attended the Magellan event earlier in the year and this was far worse and described as a crash fest.
from the second session day 1 my bike had electronic issues with warnings in German on the dash. Third session (previous error reset) and major warning “engine control unit failure...go to specialist workshop” - not what you want to see on track. Basically my bike could not be used as it even cut out in the paddock when bringing it back in. Got a new bike (Crashed in the first or second session already) and was able to tentatively carry on. Mate ended up on his third bike which was again one crashed earlier but put back to work. His first had major stability issues and then had same engine message and cut out on track (luckily he was upright when this happened) , second bike was a crashed one and this failed early day 2 with Ecuador management issues but he managed to finish on a third bike.
‘We found out later that a number of bikes had just come back from BMW Munich the day before our event due to these same issues...our start bikes were 2 of these so clearly B`mW didn’t sort the issues out. After this event 5 or 6 bikes again going back to Munich for BMW to try and sort them again.
‘Told later that all of these bikes were preproduction bikes but as they clearly are crashing all the time surely BMW should replace them as soon as they have sorted the issues...having said that they have clearly tried to sort them a number of times and failed. To me you shouldn’t allow hire bikes on track when you know that their engines could cut out at any time. Whilst upright this is dangerous enough but in a corner and you are crashing. They pay test riders a lot of money to prove these bikes....should not be using paying punters to ride what are clearly dangerous bikes. Not good for their reputation.....they hire these out in the hope of selling them later.
needless to say I cancelled my order on my return.
