Well, I finally finished the 18,000 mile valve check service on Sunday on my 2018 K46 with a significant amount of help from my eldest son. I took the DDC forks out and over to Bähnstormers in Alton who kindly serviced them for me (£179 inc VAT) and they fitted some new 10.5Nm K-Tech fork springs (£90 inc VAT delivered) to suit my heavy frame (132kg), bought the service kit from Bähnstormers (spark plugs, oil, oil filter, air filter) and the grey fronted cam chain tensioner plug (it pushes the OEM chain tensioner further back towards the cam chain and replaces the original black faced tensioner plug. Now the engine sounds like a sewing machine instead of a bag of spanners..... Thanks to @JamieMac for his technical advice about using feeler gauges on the cams to measure the clearances. All 16 valves were double checked and proved within spec, phew!

I was a bit nervous throughout, I read the Haynes manual loads of times, checked YouTube on the dangers of incorrectly installing the air filter and took everything apart slowly and took photographs using my phone to remind me during reassembly. Put her back together, checked the DDC forks with the refitted Alpha Racing 2D potentiometer and all was good showing both Compression and Rebound, delighted that she fired up first time and that there were no leaks anywhere and especially from the cam cover gasket and she sounded much healthier too.

You can't easily get the cam cover off in order to check the valve clearances with the forks installed as you need to remove the plastic protection shroud covers which lie horizontally and separate in the middle, this cover is sited between the cam cover and the radiator. I needed to undo the radiator on the top two bolts and push it forward to get full access to the cams with the feeler gauges.

I was quoted £890 inc VAT for the service including the forks but not including bleeding the brakes as that had been done in the last 12 months. I think I saved about £450 doing it myself, but I have a positive sense of achievement. Looking forward to my ride on it this weekend or tomorrow afternoon.
 
yep, loosening the top 2 radiator mounts and dropping the rad/oil cooler off their central ‘wire’ mounts help immensely. Bending your feeler gauges also help a lot. Also a sheet of cardboard taped on the inside of the rad helps prevent damage. I’ve done it so many times now that from picking up the first tool to having access to spark plugs or shiftcam solenoids is a 15-20 minute job now. 👍
