I'm going to change over case savers on the RR.
Can someone tell me what 3nm then 90degrees means, I need to replace a case screw which is aluminium as apparently you can't reuse them.
Thanks!

3Nm (Newton metres) is too low for most torque wrenches. It roughly equates to the imperial measurement - just snug. After doing the bolt up "just snug", turn it a further 90 degrees.

Torque Setting

3 Nm is the torque value to be used when tightening the bolt, followed by an additional 90? turn.

Thanks guys.
Yes it's a really low torque, the HP case savers I took off were almost finger tight.
Im wondering if I can just reuse one bolt as I'm sure it will only come as a complete kit. The GB covers uses one different mounting point, I'll phone the dealer today to find out.

GB Racing

The last time I fitted GB Racing crash protectors they came supplied with replacement engine case bolts.

Yes they come with stainless bolts which are tightened to 10 nm but they use a different mounting point on one screw compared to the HP ones. I need to replace an original aluminium bolt back onto the case then fit the new covers with the bolts they supply.
Thankfully I found out the different torque values before getting stuck in and making them all 10nm!

The last thing you want to do is overtighten and snap a bolt. Drilling and extracting a broken bolt is outrageously time consuming.

Loupe. The aluminium oe case bolts are designed to stretch fit, so BMW will tell you they are single use only. You can use them again with no ill effect, I wouldn't reuse them more than a couple of times though. Just be careful when you put the one you want to put back in is only 3nm and the 90 turn. It won't snap. I accidentally torqued one of those bad boys up to 10nm and it eventually snapped at 10, so 3nm is very safe.

Sounds like your BMW dealer tightened your hp case savers to the alu oe spec which is wrong.

I am guessing that you've realised the BMW hp case savers look nice but don't save the case covers to the extent the GB one do, proper stuff lol!

Thanks Soof, I've ordered one but think I'll just put the original back in. Yes they look good but I'd have saved myself a bit of hassle if I'd put the GB ones on instead. To be fair they did the job and it's just the gravel rash that marked the case.

Forgot to mention that I did cheat a little after I snapped one of the alu case bolts. Luckily the bolt snapped in such a way that I was able to unscrew and remove the remaining end using the rest of the bolt as purchase. After that saga I bought a ti race spec drilled engine bolt set from pro bolt and fitted them. Expensive, but I knew they wouldn't snap lol.

Sounds like a good idea to get those instead, you were lucky with that bolt!
