What's best way to remove and refit this nut? Is it ok to just have it in first gear?

Cheers Ryan.. I used a length of 2 x 2 soft timber and put it in the spokes of the rear wheel... bit of muscle and pop.. think the nut is alu. Amazed at the exposed threads...must be around 6 full that I could count.

Thats the hardest axle pin ive taken out in a long time if not ever... had to switch one of my grinding wheels for the wire brush to clean this up... it was solid !

The rizoma front sprocket cover is a nice change from the oe plastic box cover. Don't know about the nut.

Its where the bearings sit on the pin. Ive seen it a few times in previous bikes. The pin was totally solid, had to drive it out with a 12" half inch drive extension. Took about 10 belts with a hammer to get it to shift... another reason for doing your own maintenance. Theres no way a garage will clean and lube up the rear axle as well as I will if I had put it in to get the chain and sprox fitted that is.

In the first photo Stu, the chain looks as though it might have a tight link around the 1-2 o'Clock position. Hoping it's just the way the chain is positioned with the rear wheel off.
Pro bolt do titanium blue sprocket nuts to match your wheels if your going full bling.
