Hello Experts,

Quick question, anyone know if the braking system for the 2022 S1000RR is the same for both US and European models? I have imported a USA spec 2022 S1000RR into Japan, and I am jammed up at the final paper hurdle of showing brake system compliance with Japanese regulations. The Japanese system essentially adopts the European specification (I am told) and compliance is obtained under reciprocity of UNECE Regulation 78.

The direction I was given by the registered importers was to show the brake system on the USA model is the same brake system used on the European models of 2022 S1000RR motorcycles. All European models meet EU/UNECE Regulation 78 compliance, and by extension, the same brake system used on the USA specification of the motorcycle would also. Obtain a letter from the local BMW dealer stating the brake system on the USA spec model is the same brake system used on the European models is usually enough to get the motorcycle registered.

The brake recall a few years back (2021) was specific to US models which puzzled me as I had a new Irish registered S1000 m package back then but got no such recall and there was no brake recall in Europe so I still have not got to the bottom of what that was all about and why was it US specific?

Federal laws, not the bike, the Hayes calipers were likely to cost them more in litigation than in replacement.

The Hayes brakes had seal issues. We saw the same in Europe but it wasn't deemed worthy of recall here just warranty if it failed

Can someone direct me where to look on the motorcycle for the E-mark label that certifies the braking system to UNECE Rule 78. Its going to look similar in format to the attached picture which is the E-mark for a colleague's Triumph brake system (see attached). I would presume the certifying country would be 1 = Germany, so it most likely depicts E1 inside the circle, then 78R for UNECE Rule 78, followed by a two digit number indicating the current revision number to UNECE Rule 78 at time of motorcycle manufacture, followed by a four digit number uniquely assigned to the BMW brake system. If you could provide a picture that would be fabulous, or if you could tell me where it is located on the motorcycle (EU markets only), I can check on my USA spec 2022 S1000RR for it. To date, I have been unable to locate it (if it exists on the USA spec). I had the same issue with noise emissions, turns out the stock exhaust system was stamped and certified for both USA and EU (UNECE Rule 41) etched into the muffler on the inside of the muffler (see attached). You wouldnt have even known it was there if you weren't looking for it meticulously. I suspect the same situation on the brake system since they are the same part numbers, most likely manufactured to the highest denominator and certified for both markets to eliminate the added expense of having to manufacture two different brakes/standards. One can only hope! Any guidance or help very much appreciated. Thank you, Brett
