Supermarket fuel.

Does everyone put in garage fuel or use fuels from tesco etc?
I used to put in high octane fuel at garages and avoid the supermarkets with my blade and noticed the difference, but recently I couldn't be bothered with the helmet off and queue hassle so I've been using the pay and go at the pump which is so much easier.
I haven't noticed a difference with it but then again it's been limited till today.
Do new engines really need to have the "proper" fuel or am I just getting old and lazy?

This is something I was thinking about. The manual for the bike recommends 98ron and alternative 95ron. I tend to go with garage fuel rather than supermarket stuff and then frequently mix between unleaded and super unleaded. Fast Bikes ran a feature on fuel in the issue before the latest one, can't remember the exact outcome but I don't think there was very little difference in performance and was more focused on the cleaning properties of super unleaded; they were testing the Shell Nitro plus.

The BMW staff said off the record to ignore the 98RON requirement- they all run theirs on 95. Doesn't stop me from sticking 98 in it though, for a few pence what the hell!

I always put in Shell V power - i used to work for a company that dealt with the loading systems that load either supermarket fuels or garage fuels. Like said above its the cleaning agents that get mixed in (additives).
I will be sticking with the higher grade fuel a few pence on the tank full - Because its worth it.

I'll try sticking with the super plus from tesco and see if I notice a difference instead of the likes of Shell and BP.
It's a convenience thing, pay and go at the pump rather than half my kit off and standing in a queue with my power ranger suit on covered in flies!

Good point the garages used to have pay at the pump - don't know why they have taken the option away...

There is no difference in power using the 95 or 98 ron unless you have had the bike specifically retuned for 98 ron fuel, and then it would be marginal.

Supermarket filling stations would likely have a quicker turnover of fuel in the tanks so you could argue it is 'fresher' than from an independent that gets less traffic.

I use the SUL I find when I need some. But I do believe that Shell, Texaco, BP and Esso's SUL's will be better at cleaning my engine than a cheaper Supermarket brand.
ECU's *can* take advantage of the better knock protection of SUL, advancing the ignition timing...but that depends on how they are programmed/spec'd.

Ok, so basically don't be lazy and use the proper "garage" fuel!
and on the odd occasion stick in the supermarket stuff and pay at the pump.
I really must clean my leathers, clocked someone looking at the shoulders with all the dead bugs the other day with a disgusted look on their face lol

first thing I did was fill it with Tesco 99 RON fuel , after about 30 miles an engine light came on to return car to garage to check.
returned to Porsche specialist garage who , when I explained what I had done with the fuel , gave me the same look as the guy that presents dragons den.
He plugged it into the diagnostic machine and apparently it showed a sports CAT fault which was caused by the fuel.
He told me never to use supermarket fuel and always try and find shell if poss
he turned the light off but it came back on and only went out and stayed out since I changed to proper fuel , and I always thought it was a load of bollocks that there was any difference

Thats really interesting to know, I was a bit on the fence of the reports of supermarket fuel but will use garage stuff now and get some exercise walking to and from the kiosk

Seems like an OTT reaction from the Porsche though...unless it was a GT3 RS all singing all dancing varient!
But still I feel that my preference for Shell is right.

I've been using Tesco's Momentum 99. Found that the with the run to work I'm using 1l less fuel. Haven't noticed any difference in performance.

Is it just me, or are the other commonly available supers all 97 RON?
