Replacing the top yoke nut (cracked)

My top yoke nut has cracked, see here http://imgur.com/OJKRz1e it seems this has happened before to others.

I can't be bothered with the hassle of dealing with BMW and a new nut is only ?20 so I'm happy to replace it myself. I have the tools and know the torque setting.

My question is... is it as easy as whipping the old one off and putting the new one on, or do I need to support the bike in some way whilst it's being changed?

Just whip it off and put the new nut on, the bottom yolks and forks are held on with the two thin nuts under the top yolk
