Rear wheel nut

Hi can somebody confirm what the handbook means by mechanical thread lock ?As it says torque to 100nm - mechanical thread lock.

I guess, the Rear Wheel Nut is secured by a thread (mechanical) torqued to 100nm. Its nothing special, just a rather Large Nut tighened up on a Spindle.

Mine has no thread lock compound (studlock) on it. Perhaps the nut has a bit in it to help it lock like some sort of lock nut. I wouldnt know without looking.

I would not use any thread lock compound on it.

If you take the nut off you will be able too see in the thread what the 'mechanical' thread lock is.

I will try to put a photo up tomorrow if I get time. My nut is off the bike.

Thanks for the reply's I was thinking it meant put thread lock on as 100nm is not that tight considering the power going through the back wheel.

I think that its an interferance fit, almost a crossthreading making it bind as U tighten. Lot of on offs will wear the spindle out

It's like Bananaman says above, if you repeatably remove the wheel often, you will wear the spindle out (circa £150 from BMW), one alternative is to fit the Gilles ACM lock nut.
