Petrol fuel cap lock

I just wanted to check if my fuel cap is faulty. I went into my garage this morning and it stunk of fuel. I then discovered that the fuel cap was not shut. I had ridden for a few hours and 100 miles since I filled up yesterday. Obviously I have been careless, but I just wanted to check if mine was faulty. Are you able to remove the key without first locking the cap as mine does. I am sure on previous bikes that the key has always remained locked in place until the cap is restored and secured and that it cannot be removed until done so.

I can remove my key with the cap open, and then it just clicks shut. I much prefer it that way, personally.

i only need the key to open the cap, remove it then as just close the cap you will hear the lock click into place

Yup. Same here.

The key lock on the cap is spring loaded so it always returns the lock to the shut position with or without the key in (at least that is how mine works). I find with mine it sometimes takes a little more pressure to get the 'click' to know it is securely in place after filling up but it's normal.

Thanks guys, at least I know to pay a little more attention from now on to ensure it clicks properly closed.
