Took my bike in on Saturday for new tyres to be fitted and since having her back i seem to have also gained a really bad clunk! when changing up from 3rd to 4th and 4th to 5th. Even does it if i use the clutch to upshift, at any rev range. The odd once or twice its not done it but majority of time the clunk is there, Any ideas? The bike is a 2011 non sport with 17,200 miles full BMW service history.

Chain / sprocket related issue maybe as you've had your tyres changed. Have you checked the chain is at the right position?

Will have a look on Wednesday, thanks for the pointers in the right direction though. Was worried it was something worse but hoping its something small like slack chain.

Hmmmm thats really odd...id be inclined to think with pof...cush drives. A slack chain I think you notice right away..and would need to be really slack to cause something like that...however what about the rear caliper.. Ive not had my rear wheel off but like most bikes does the rear caliper not engage in a slot if so could be incorrectly positioned..

What makes me think its more than just the simple things is that it only does it from 3rd to 4th and 4th to 5th. the other gear changes are as smooth as butter.

Its definitely not 2 tight as i did suspect the chain when i first heard it and stopped at the side of the road and it wasnt tight. maybe slack but without checking properly i wouldn't know for sure.

Theres nothing on google that I can see... just checked the american site... was all chat about incorrect settings on quick shift etc... how did they get the wheels off ? Did you notice anything unusual.. on another note..did they torque as well... I know thats likely nothing to do with problem just curious..

How much movement have you got in the carrier. I just had my cush drive changed under warranty with 7k on a 2014. No wheelies , no track use

When i look at it tomorrow, i will check the cush drives, chain tension and torque on the rear wheel. Stu, im not sure how they took it off pal its a youngish lad who works for a suzuki dealer & they give him the small jobs to get him learning.

Was thinking about this again today... its really odd... I was going through all the permutations of wheel removal and refitting... nothings jumping into my head...Stephen might be the best guy for this with his knowledge... ive changed dozens of tyres removing wheel myself or watching it being done.. mibe just coincidence that its happened at same time as wheels were off.. could be mechanical or electronic issue.. **** knows mate.. let us all know tho

I wouldn't be surprised if it was nothing to do with the wheel being off as stu said it could be a coincidence. The rear wheel goes on and off fairly simply, you'd be hard pressed to get it wrong (although its definitely possible)

Is it 100% only on 3rd to 4th to 6th? If thats the case its less likely to be a mechanical issue at the back end..

When you say meaty clunk (i know its subjective) is it just audible or can you feel it in the pegs or seat? If so is it when you engage the gear lever or when you re open the throttle?

Its really hard to diagnose an issue such as this via the forum so you're more than welcome to pop in if your passing and I could take it out and maybe shed some light on the matter :)

EDIT: Also if you ride along at a constant speed - say 8000rpm (on a nice quiet road) then shut the throttle and open it again a few times that would highlight an issue at the back end ie cush drives...

I could feel the clunk through the pegs and gear lever. Sprayed the gear lever and quickshifter linkages with some WD40 and re-adjusted the chain and the noise/feel has completely gone. It must of been pure coincidence that it was only 4th & 5th gear. Just glad its sorted and was nothing major.
