Hi all,

glad to to be part of the forum, I'm just in a dilemma on which year s1000rr to go for, and was looking out of BMW, Panigale and r1 but the 2010 model
 
Welcome mate, a 2010 Sthou is going to be a lot cheaper than an 1199 (which I've been reliably told is a challenging bike to get the best out of, although I find the 1299 excellent) and a lot cheaper than the current R1, what's your budget?
 
I'm currently looking at 10k and below, that's why I looked at the 2010 r1 as well, so I can get a second bike later on :p
 
You should be able to get a gen2 2012/13 bike for ?10k if you shop around, it has some subtle but worthwhile tweeks over the gen1 bike and is a much better bike all round than a similar aged 1199 or R1 IMO
 
What changes did they make on the 2nd gen model? I did find the 2009-2010 at 9k
 
Hi mate
I've a generation 1 (2010-2011) and if you could stretch it I'd definitely go for a generation 2 (2012-2014)
They simply ironed out a few issues like the gearing to give you more mid range and they've reduced the amount of turn needed with the throttle
Also they changed the rear seat unit ( now looks better) and added the winglet's

Shop about definatly. I bought a 2014 gen 2 18 mnths ago for 9750. There are bargains to be had. As for the 14b i found them big and heavy looking and you need to spend some cash to get them "right". I cant comment on the duc as ive never been on one

i'll hold out and look for a 2012 onwards then, I saw a couple 2012 earlier but always get worried if it's still the 2011 as they could have registered it later, or it just happens to fall in to the 2012 reg plates.
what should I look out for to make sure it's the 2nd gen models?
 
The seat unit is the big giveaway.
They have a hole on each side

Ah ok, thanks for that, is the front end the same as the first gen
 
Bodywork can be changed.
The Frame though is different in an obvious way.
2010-2011 the Swingarm pivot point in the leg by the rearsets is a diamond shape.
2012+ it is an oval.

Another visible difference between 2010/11 and 2012/14 is the sharks gills face the other way..
And here's some invisible revisions ... 2010/11 vs 2012

The rear sprocket is given an extra tooth, from 44 up to 45, to aid acceleration.
Final Drive Ratio, was 1:2.588, now 1:2.647
The air-intake through the headstock has been revised to increase the surface area by 20%. The throttle action is quicker, now requiring 11% less travel. All this gives the BMW extra oomph off the corners

The new model has a shorter wheelbase, down from 1432mm to 1422.7mm.
The steering head angle changes from 24 degrees to 23.9 degrees, while trail is increased by 2.6mm.
A mid-speed damping valve has been added to the front forks and internals have been revised with the aim of improving front-end feedback.

The rear shock features a new spring and a wider range of adjustment.
The swingarm pivot is located 4mm higher in the chassis a move designed to improve suspension feel.
The bars are set wider and the reach to them is slightly greater, for more leverage than before.

The Rain power mode has been revised, from a rather meagre 152bhp to 163bhp. The main changes are to the traction control and 'combustion control'. The Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) was a popular optional extra on the original model, with over 98% of customers opting for it. BMW have revised the system, refining it, making its intervention less obvious. The 'combustion control' is used in Slick mode and is designed to help corner entry by 'opening' the throttle a minute amount to maintain the perfect amount of engine braking.

There’s less engine braking in Slick mode now. The throttle butterflies open to take some compression out of the engine when you’ve got the throttle shut entering a corner.
 
I'm going to see if I can view any this weekend, my aim will be the 2012 onwards, but if I have any luck finding one below the 10k mark and lower mileage would be perfect
