Hello there! I am currently torn between buying a brand new RR or an ex demo 2015/2016 model. Money is not a factor but I dislike the 17 CAT and prefer the 16 belly pan?

Also finding parts for the 17 like exhaust and belly pan have proven difficult!

So I guess my question is, what would you do and am I missing something obvious which should guide my choice?

Thanks

Welcome,

If you're not fussed then I, as a '17 owner, would recommend getting a '16 that has all the toys including ABS Pro.
Don't get me wrong I love my new bike, but if I could have found the right '16 at the time of looking then I'd probably have saved some wedge.

As for the exhaust / bellypan - all the 16 gear fits the 17 in most cases. Exhausts need to be full systems to ditch the cat anyway. Then the same bellypan will go on, or you can us the Premier Members discount to get a nice Full Six carbon jobby from Conquest Carbon.

I've just swapped my 2015 (15k miles) for a '17 and there are some key differences. If you already owned a '16 i'd say just keep it....the bike is amazing! But......if you're looking to buy a bike, the '17 feels more refined...everything is smoother: Throttle response, fuelling, DDC , quickshifter/blipper, new uprated ECU, new uprated alternator (presumably to fix some of the electrical gremlins and battery issues on the '15) ....yes the cat is ugly, but 3rd party replacements are starting to arrive in the next few weeks. I'd suggest maybe test riding both bikes and see if you think the changes are worth paying the extra for? Either way you'll have yourself an epic machine! ;)

I too looked at the 17 didn't really like the graphics and like you the cat on show.I bought a 16 RR and got busy buying parts for it with the money saved on a new one.For me the 16 is all the bike I could ever want and if I get anywhere near it's potential I will be a happy man.

For me it wasn't based on the physical cat difference but more to do with the Euro 4 (always harping on at this). Very taken in by the base grey / black colour and the Motorsports looks stunning at a distance (even seen the other direct of traffic on the M27 and I was a little jealous!)

BMW has done a fab job in not restricting the 17 & its alleviated my concerns about greater emissions controls (such that have reduced the R6 by 10hp, ZZR by a few brake too). As above if the 17 has upgraded throttle response etc it will be an absolute ease to ride; I thought only the alternator had changed but its more heavily revised all round.

Dont quote anything on MCN we all know how accurate it can be
:wink-new:
Seems the only downside of a more revised bike might be some of the below Onboard Diagnostics.

So, from 2016, Euro 4 bikes will have to pass a SHED test (Sealed Housing for Evaporative Determination) in which they’re literally stored in a container and have the fumes they give off measured.

Bikes will also have to have onboard diagnosis (OBD1) systems fitted, in which the bike measures and records the status of its emissions management systems, giving plug-in fault-finding and status updates for service technicians (who can then tell if a bike is still emissions compliant later in its life). OBD2 is planned for 2020, when the bike will be required to self-diagnose and self-correct to maintain its emissions control throughout its lifetime.

Just to elaborate on the '17 throttle response: There is one key difference coming from the '15 and i noticed it straight away.....the throttle on the '15 has a little bit of "free play" in it before the engine responds....i got used to it but it always bugged me especially when launching the bike...the throttle response on the '17 is instant.....makes it so much easier to launch the bike from a standstill :)

Well you're making me glad I did take the punt and spend the extra :) I did notice the throttle was eager!

Yes the free play is annoying but something you get used to, would prefer the newer style throttle response.
Wonder what the cost to change is or if software can update the 15?

?? No play on my '15 at all, instant response...

No 'free play' on my March '16 build. The throttle response is better than any other bike (direct or RBW) I've ever ridden.

It's something that has been discussed before and i noticed straight away when taking the bike out compared to my fireblade
Ive had two 15 plate bikes and they were the same?

Maybe something that was fixed with software at some point in the later builds? I have instant response on my throttle, and I don't get the vibration through the bars others complain about, either. Possibly just a later ECU flash or something?

Yes possibly an update may fix, it's something I'll mention when it's being serviced next month.
Ive learned to live with it but would prefer instant throttle instead of a slight roll on first.

No vibration through the bars that annoys me and only a slight right turn assist

Hmmm interesting...i just presumed all 15/16 RRs had that same "free play" ?? .....as i said my '15 did (march 2015 build) and i rode quite a few demo RR's (15&16) and they all had same issue. I spoke to a couple of dealers about it and they seemed rather disinterested! I did wonder whether a 3rd party flash could solve it but i just got used to it in the end. Bananaman, have you had your '15 re-flashed by anyone?

Hya, no re-flash. I have pcv, de-cat and can but wouldn't have thought that would make a difference in actual free play....
