Same place as Alex, stuck the ballast down with double sided 3M pads that are for the GoPro, never moved in 3 years, have two stuck under the beak of my GSA and they get a lot of vibration and muck chucked at them and have never even looked like coming unstuck.

Anyone of you hid experienced guys up for doing a how-to thread? I’d feel more confident about this if someone got the crayons out. I tried to silicone a bath edge once... it was like a 100 man *******, so i’m a bit nervous about being let loose with the porridge cannon on my lovely bike.

Its really straightforward Wayne, but you do have to drill a hole in the plastic cover on the back of your lights. Can't remember the size but it is to fit the grommet that the HiD cables pass through. Use the 3M pads for the ballasts if you can't control your splat gun.

I'll see if I can dig out the instruction leaflet for my lights.

No, the hole is drilled the right size for the rubber grommet which seals the cover.

Some kits come with a special back plate which fits the bike, so there's even less to do.

Does fitting HID's affect the insurance in any way?

Spoke to insurers about HID lights when I did mine, they were fine with them no extra payment or other nonsense, but always tell them otherwise gives a "get out" in the event of claim.

Handy to send a photo of any modification and email them what you have done, saves any denial from either side.

Sounds pretty cut n'dried - DoT says it's illegal to sell and fit HiD kits to convert Halogen to HiD primarily due to different light spread (if i read it right). If that's the case, the insurance companies will surely probably baulk at cover and/or payout. Maybe they don't know the DoT's stance?

I'll keep looking - maybe this legislation is out-dated or there are circumstances where retro-fitting without fitting a purpose designed headlight unit will pass.

Whilst 'letter of the law' you're right.
A) I've never failed to get an MOT with a a car or bike I've retrospectively fitted them to. So the MOT says you're legal...
B) Good HIDS have a very strong cut off and no light bleed like Halogens (fire them up side by side facing a wall and you'll see what I mean).
C) 6x better lighting is worth the risk of a non-payout, as it may avoid the need entirely.

Question for any owners of bikes with HID installed: Have you experienced what it's like for drivers coming the other way?
Obviously won't be pleasant if it's on full-beam, but I'm interested to know what they're like dipped.
Reason being, I occasionally come across a car who has just dipped his lights but is still far too bright, this dazzling is lethal. It's either a Halfords hero in a 20 year old Micra, or a **** in a pimped VAG car.
I've never noticed this with a bike, only cars. Dunno if they're HID or not.

Funny you should ask that Huge, today whilst driving my Landrover I saw bike around half a mile away riding towards me. The headlight was very bright but not dazzling like a full beam, when it got to me I saw it was GS that I know has a HID fitted as I know the owner. In contrast my regular riding buddy has a K1600 and is almost invisible until up close when his Halo lights are on, I had told him several times that I cannot tell if he is behind me in my mirrors as his lights are like damp candles.

Dipped HIDs are fine, potential life savers. IMHO

I only do the main beam in HID not the high beam. HID have a warm up period and as the high beam is also the flash the beam does not have enough time to give a flash.

Hi Chuck, you can get fast ballasts that instantly light up a HID for High beam.

The ones Huge was looking at are rated at 0.1 startup time. I expect technology has moved on and so we should check if the latest ballasts/bulbs are truly able to service the 'flash' requirement.

Les quoted me "0.01 fire time", I presume that's 1 hundredth of a second.
I agree that 1 tenth would be annoying.
