Hi guys,

Got a new tyre fitted buy a f#@king incompetent bike shop, turns out they ordered and fitted a 50 profile instead of a 55 , dicks , can't get a new one till next week so going to miss all the good weather because of these useless c#@ts, bit livid tbh.

would any of you use the 50? will it affect the bike? anyone used a 50?

cheers David

Sake mate ! Nightmare... your into the old rolling circumference v abs traction etc issues there.. two schools of thought on it... take it its a 190 what make Davy..who you getting them from ive a spare 200 rear M7RR you can have if your running them

Stuart

You'll be ok with the 50 profile bud. In some ways the handling might be better for you. Also the dtc will have been factory set up for a 50 rear.

cheers Stu. it's a dunlop sportsmart 2 mate 190 , uch a phoned them and they say they will try to change it tomorrow.....
cheers soof I am really tempted but I can be funny if somthing isn't the norm In my head I can't commit etc.

cheers lads am off to sulk.

Ride and fit in paisley avoid.

I think 50 profile will be a problem with DTC. The 200/55 will not be a problem. See if they have a 200/55 available.

I think the rest of the lads are right on this one, don't take my advice on the 50 profile!

Although I'm pretty sure in the past we've had members fit 50 profile before and found it was not a problem?

cheers guys, think I am going to change the tyre, can't be confident in somthing I don't trust tbh , this saga has been going on since Wednesday, the muppets actually fitted a roadsmart, and now they have fitted the wrong size of sportsmart, honestly incompetent doesn't begin to cover it.

There was a 50 on my bike when I bought it
I didn't realise till I was getting a new set
Didn't notice much difference to be honest

According to the manual changing to a 200/55 will be a problem with the DTC and has to be re-coded by BMW.

That is a fact that is hotly debated. It's BMW covering their arse, in the real world the bikes run fine with 200/55 tyres if they came with 190/55 from factory. Bikes with forged wheels come with 200/55 profile rears from the factory anyway so the DTC is already programmed for it.

Nightmare on the tyre front mate, I use Stevie allways get a good deal from him

And if you swap back to 190/55 from the forged wheels you're supposed to have it recalibrated. BMW didn't spend this much money developing these bikes and not know what they're doing.

Im the same as you mate... if theres something in your head its a distraction, last thing you need on a bike...

Well it can't be throwing any errors up that BMW can see or need to make a note of then as my bike had 200/55's on and the tyres I currently have are 190/55's, the bike has just been serviced and tested and they never made any mention of it and the TC still works as normal for me too. So as much as BMW spent a lot of money developing the bikes I doubt that the profile change causes too much of a problem for the electronics, much the same as my bike never needed an ECU flash to swap from normal indicators to LED's (whereas some people seemingly have had to).

Recoding

The manual does indeed state that the bike needs to be recoded by BMW if changing between a 190/55 and 200/55 rear tyre. However in reality the system does have some built-in tolerances to take into account the actual variation in tyre sizes between manufacturers. For example if you physically measure the height and circumference of a Metzeler 200/55 tyre and then compare its dimensions with a Bridgestone 200/55 tyre they are quite different. It's when these differences fall outside of the BMW set parameters that you may then experience issues with DTC etc. BMW are unlikely to publish what these tolerances actually are but by having the bike recoded at your dealership you are simply altering the electronic parameters to allow them to work within a better operating envelope for a given generic tyre size.

For race use the HP RCK3 allows you to specifically programme the electronics with exact tyre dimensions in order to get the most from the DTC and other rider aids. For everyday riding and trackdays this type of fidelity isn't required. From my own experience I'm frequently switching between 200/55 and 190/60 rear tyres on track without issue.

I've run a couple of 200s instead of the 190. No problem at all. Running a 50 instead of 55 should not be an issue either. But maybe get it switched as soon as they can do it. I normally run in slick mode or rain if it's horrid. Only ever seen tc light on a wet trackday in rainmode. So would not worry too much. It's sunny tomorrow 7.00 am start methinks

Unless I've missed something, a 50 profile tyre would probably be ok, but the OP ordered a 55 profile tyre, and the OP wouldn't be happy with the 'wrong tyre'. Not only is the OP the only person who can assess whether or not he would be happy with the 'wrong' tyre, it is clearly a reasonable attitude. If someone gave me a 190/50 tyre and I couldn't afford to buy a new one, I would probably take it (and be on a far cheaper bike), but if I ordered a specific tyre and paid good money for it, I'd be wanting that tyre.
