Just wondering...What is so good about a R1m? Was looking at them possibly thinking about getting one next year (Was is the key word here) And found they only have like 170bhp @ the rear wheel? Compared to s1000rr which have like 180-190? Just wondering why anyone would pay extra for something with less power? Is there something the R1m does that the s1000rr doesnt? More Torque?

The R1 and R1M set a new standard for traction control with their 6-axis IMU.
They are also reported to have one of the most track-focused chassis?s.
The R1M is an R1 in all details, but with the Ohlins semi-active suspension, carbon fibre fairings, a brushed aluminium tank and the data-logger.

The power delivery and torque curve are very different with a cross-plane crank vs a flat-plane crank i4.

As to which is better, like with so many things it?s purely personal preference and what you intend to use the bike for (road, track, or a bit of both)
 
I personally think its all about the bragging rights about who has more HP ;)

Haven't ridden an R1M but have ridden an R1, top end power means nothing most of the time so its kind of academic unless your racing and I didn't find it lacking at all in fact I thought it was a real hoot to ride, light, sharp handling and a great sound track just not as comfortable or practical as an S1K
 
Awesome on track. Don?t think I could have one on the road.

Power shortfall is recoverable from what I gather.

Yamaha R1M

The Yamaha R1M is awesome on track and the riding experience is very different compared to the BMW. The Ohlins electronic suspension is in my opinion superior to the Sachs DDC system found on the S1000RR. I would avoid buying an R1M for road use as it's so incredibly focused. That said I would personally never buy another 1000cc superbike for the road again as they just can't be used properly unless your on a track.
 
Its a good job most people do buy 1000cc bikes for the road otherwise development will eventually go the same way as the once buoyant but now virtually non existent 600cc sports bike market.
 
Yamaha R1M

I've ridden a Yamaha R1M on track and it was superb.
 
I've ridden an R1M on the road but not in anger 😟
I found the suspension to be better than my '15 gen 3. Though having re sprung the BMW to suit my weight, I'm not sure if I can still say that about the Yamaha. I'd have to have another ride to find out.
Riding the R1M on the road, I found it needed it's gearbox far more than the BMW though🙁
 
Yamaha R1M

I spent 5 sessions riding one on track at Silverstone last year. It was absolutely superb and the whole riding experience is very different to the S1000RR. The gearing is tall but it suits the crossplane engine configuration and you actually find yourself using a lower gear than you normally would but it has power and torque everywhere you need it. The R1M is physically tiny which I really like and the chassis is excellent and offers loads of mechanical grip especially during corner exit. Where it beats the S1000RR is the Ohlins electronic suspension. It is so much better than the Sachs DDC system and every aspect of it is adjustable without the need to purchase an external potentiometer. The electronics are no better or worse than the BMW's very good traction control and riding modes. It just takes a little bit of getting used to but the TFT screen makes it easier to navigate through the various settings. The built-in datalogger is excellent and much more user friendly than the 2D HP Datalogger and associated software. I could lap just as quickly on the Yamaha as I could on the BMW but you have to ride it differently and I was working harder to do it. I'm not going to say which one is better or worse as quite frankly they both offer very different, and positive, riding experiences and I can appreciate each bike for what it is. I only ride on track and I would certainly buy one for that purpose alone. They are expensive but comparatively speaking you get a lot for your money and it is far more exclusive than an S1000RR if that sort of thing matters to you.
 
According to many write ups the R1 is better on track and S1k better for road. Of course that depends on skill level...

This is a good point. Most reviews I've seen have said this and the riding position on the R1 can be very tiresome with wrists starting to ache on longer journeys. This is why I think the S1K is the best all rounder, for a Sports Bike it is very comfortable.
