heres the story so far. 2 track days ago i had 2 gear jumps, as i was going for 5th gear it jumped back into a false neutral and obviously in my hurry to get back in gear it made a horrid grinding noise. Then on the last track day i did it did it twice again once as i went for 5th gear again and once as i went from 2nd to 3rd. now im not 100% sure but i think i may have been a little soft on the changes as this is a 2011 and ive been riding my 15 plate a lot and you only need the slightest touch to shift on the 15. has anyone had any similar issues and whats your thoughts on stripping the box (dont really want too if possiable). the bikes an 11 plate with 8000 miles and oil changed around twice a year. ive done about 30 track days over the last couple of years with no issues or metal in the oil. ive been using the bazzaz qs and after the first track day it did it i changed to the hm plus ss but still did it although in different gears. whats your thought?

just to add, most of this was after the first track day and only a couple of bits after the second track day it happened on.

I have found little bits like this in a couple of oil changes r25, mabey not as big but I have put it down to the gear box , when I first got the bike I hit a lot of false neutrals it's was so bad i thought there was something wrong with it! plus I am not the most mechanically sympathetic at times, it's strange that you've not had any metal in the oil and now you do?

i think it was from weak shifting a couple of times on the last couple of track days. but yes no bits over the last 10 or so oil changes. im thinking i need to try it a couple more track days and see how it goes rather than panic and strip the engine.

your right mate really need to be positive with the shifts, I wouldn't panic either, defo worth keeping an eye on, there must be a few folk on here who do their own oil changes regularly that have experienced this?

If the bike is running fine now and no bits in the last 10 oil changes I would agree with Davy that its nothing to worry about. However it is really a big waste of money to put 20 and 1 pence pieces in your gearbox. Much better sending them to me, I'll PM you my Swiss chocolate bank account details.

Take care

Gen 1 was a nightmare for false neutrals, my earlier blades ands gixxer thou's were such a sweet box I treated the bm the same. Unfortunately, bm r&d were lacking in this department and I swear there was a better box in a tractor.... I had too much swarf/gear tips in my oil changes (which I did more than necessary and took pictures) for my liking and reported such in my services.. In my 4thyear of ownership (out of warrenty) it needed an engine replacement which included gearbox and bmw supplied foc. I must add, all servicing was up to date and some....
You will always find more info on things that go wrong rather than things that are perfect, I bought a 2015 so that must tell you something.

Not good this. Certainly a reason for me to extend the warranty on mine next year I think.

im thinking its not too bad. :) yes theres a few bits but i ride it fairly hard too. like i said i think its because i have a gen 3 as well and its such a smooth slick box theres hardly any need to touch the gear lever. i recon if it was any smother then i could change gear just by thinking about it.lol. im going to book rocky for the gen 1 this weekend and be a little rougher with her.lol. will report how it goes.

a lot of the time it's the dogs on the gears that wear, not the actuall teeth, they just tend to shear in chunks.but it's worn dogs that will allow the bike to jump out of gear,it's a big job+expensive to strip the motor, and tbh theres not a lot of metal there really so i'd just see if it happens again then take it from there

FWIW on occasion mine hits false neutral between 5th and 6th...I'm sure it's both ways... only when I'm hammering it. Last time it happened was two weekends ago when I was out at Lochgilphead/Oban with my mate...just after a big straight and I was setting myself up for a corner.... it seems to just hang between gears..I need to wait a sec or two for the motor to spin down make sure the lever is fully retracted then it will move into gear...but meanwhile there's carnage happening down in the guts with all sorts of horrible noises so your not alone !

Ive never used the clutch on the upshifts unless under 3k. Ive had the odd false neutral but that was down to a pathetic gear change by me or i was on a neutral throttle

I mainly use my QS but you know the score when your nicking on and your on a bit of road you know well... no brakes just let the engine and back end do all the work... the corner in question was a downshift anyhow.... but that missed gear must now be a few dozen times it's happened, it's frustrating and fucks up the corner..
