Hi. Has anyone got experience of fitting a Kriega tail pack (US20/30) directly onto the rear cowel, as opposed to a rear seat pad?

I don't have a rear seat and am keen to know if the pack sits securely directly on the rear plastic.

Obviously I would use rubber matting, or similar, to protect the paint.

Cheers

I've never done it but I don't see there being an issue. As long as it's secured it should be ok I'd imagine.

The cowl, could mark the paint of the tail unit, if under the weight of pack.

If whatever you are putting inside the kreiga flexes/is soft so the tail pack moulds to the contours of the cowl then it will work. Not ideal.

Thanks for the replies. Agree, not ideal, but have you seen the price of seat pads?!

Regarding seat pads: Obviously the lock is in the seat itself. Does that mean that any RR key fits any other RR seat? Must be a universal lock?

No, they're keyed to the same key as the ignition, not universal.

I took my luggage on the back of mine on the cowl, not a seat pad. That's a 52L Bags Connection tail pack with a tent pack added on the top. Was fine, moulded to the bike. Used gripmat to protect the paintwork, and added several D ring fastening points under the tail section.

Nice engineering, but, looks like it requires removal of the lock from the seat cowl and re-installation onto the rack. Not sure I can be arsed with that! I'm not a regular tourer, just looking for a solution for a long weekend away. Leaning towards a kriega (probably a US20 now), mounted on the cowl, with lots of padding.

It does require a lock , don't know if you can take it off the cowl. Get one from BMW can't see it being that expensive and they'll code it too your key. If you want to sell it few years down the line you'll get back pretty much what you've paid for it.

BMW quoted me 25 quid for a key matched lock.

Being a tightwad, I took mine off the seat pad and fitted it to the cowl. Takes quite literally two minutes.

Yeah it's really quick to swap locks.
The H&B Sport Rack protects the tail and provides lots of luggage mounting choices.

I've also seen on other forums people simply putting a non slip Matt over the seat cowl and strapping the luggage onto that. Saves the paintwork and gives the luggage a bit more grip rather than sitting on the painwork.

Really simple process MRD. Get some gaffer tape and cover all exposed parts ( that your worried of damage) and for double protection use some webbing. Then just fasten in the 4 anchor points on the Kriega and job done. Easy peasy lol.

Worked on the R

I use one of those non-slip pads / mats between the Kriega and the cowl.

I have the H&B and it works great with the Kreiga US20/2xUS10 combo - you do need a lock, but you can get one from a BMW dealer for about ?60 quid.

I have also used the US10 direct on top of the seat pad - I don't use larger pack on seat pad in case it scratches the plastics of the tail.

If I were you I wouldn't use the Kriega on top of the cowl - not because of scratches - but because of flimsy plastic mounting of the lock into the cowl. If you mount a heavy bag on top of the cowl all the forces of the weight will be on the screws into the plastic where the lock screws into the cowl - this can easily break.

The lock mounting on the seat pad and H&B is more robust.
