I know what you're saying re tethering...but have you read of a case where a RAM mount allowed a phone to drop off? (I've not searched)
Are you worried about the ball mount detaching or the phone falling out of the holder?

Looking at the zips a small reusable tie tag could work.

Bob Telfer at http://www.telferizer.com/ does a whole host of mounts and phone cases. I had a mount and case that I transferred from my last bike to the Beemer. Totally secure and waterproof, and the ability to plug a charging lead in on the move as well. Very personal servcie and highly recommended.

Hi Alex, yes worried about the phone getting free of the x grip, not the ball joint itself. I'm fairly confident that it wouldn't go awol but I can't have a situation where the phone slips/moves and I'm suddenly reaching for it when I should be keeping fixed on the road. Piece of mind really.
I pondered the waterproof case option, and may still end up that route, just a little bothered about the phone overheating, as I've read it can happen. That waterproof case with ball joint is a good option, thanks.
Bagwafu- I looked at the telfriezer offering, and went with the hornig yoke mount instead. I had a 'screw in' mount previously and found that it was not best suited to being removed/reinstated a lot because the mount needed enough torque to keep it fixed which then became a problem getting it out (that was my experience). The hornig mount uses an Allen key bolt through the ball joint to create an expansion joint in the centre tube which I think I will get on better with, as I will be using the mount on two bikes, it will get moved about.
I will update the thread when everything is on the bike.

Thanks for the info, unfortunately that zumo link doesn't work for me, think I need to register, no bother, I've made my bed already, so to speak...
I got the ball mount from hornig in Germany. With shipping with worked out around ?37.
