Anyone taken a shock spring in hand luggage before?

I want, last minute to take my other shock spring tomorrow, think it will get through or be rejected as potentially an offensive weapon??

My inclination would be to stick it in the hold, airlines are normally falling over themselves to get you to put hand luggage in there so shouldn't be a problem!

Parts

From experience it's far easier just to put everything in hold baggage and not have to worry about having parts confiscated. The only thing I take onboard as hand luggage for European trackdays is my Arai helmet.

Yeah its in the helmet in the bag... hmmm I may not bother...

Arf arf.
I have a checked luggage option but I'm doing my best to avoid it.
But I guess I can use it on the return! :p

When I flew back from the Classic car show last year in Birmingham the Edinburgh flight was full of old geezers including my Dad clutching various car parts and memorabilia.
Reckon they could have built a half decent Hillman Imp by the amount of spares that they collectively had. No-one batted an eye at security.
On the flip side, a young guy got a bottle of aftershave taken from him even though it was within the limit for liquids because it was in a grenade shaped bottle. Loads of passengers came to his defence as he broke no rules but the security staff took it off him, which we though was out of order as in duty free the airport was selling the same stuff, in the same bottle........

Best set stick it in the hold Alex, you'd be gutted if some jobsworth confiscated it.

Dont take it and quandary solved. It's not fundamental to your trip. Plenty to be getting on with without rear shock spring changes...?

Yeah, shock springs, fork springs, a KTech shock. But they removed a 19 & 27 mm spanners, very strange.
And they expected me to just say throw them away I don't mind.
We kept the plane waiting whilst we checked the baggage, for free. Lol.
That was Leeds, Bradford to Alicante

No hand tools can be taken on any flight Paul, for security. Even the Techs who work on the plane have to return all tools and have them signed back in before the plane can taxi away. There is a picture of a very handsome young man demonstrating this somewhere on here.

It was just bizarre that his face was a picture looking at the x-rays, and they only wanted to remove the 2 spanners. Surely hitting someone with a KTech shock would cause more damage than a 19mm combi spanner.

REgards,
Paul.

On board, no dramas, three knives and a handgun but no spanners!

To be honest Alex, finding someone with a spring compressor would cost you. 3 people came to ask for them doing from us, we declined as we had our own agenda to work to, not to do work for someone else.
Don't forget to take ? to pay your bills with and not Euros

Springs

I wouldn't worry about changing front or rear springs on a trackday unless you are testing in preparation for a race season. Just focus on learning the circuit and enjoying your time on track.

A friend of mine has a place in Cyprus and regularly travels there. He doesn't put stuff in the hold as his place is stocked up with all he needs already. So it's just hand luggage for him so he can depart the 'plane quickly and get on his way. The last time he was there one of his sun loungers needed repairing so he put a couple of 10mm spanners in his hand luggage together with a few 6mm coach bolts and nuts the next time he went. He couldn't believe it when they wouldn't let him take any of them on board, bolts and nuts included!

Haha, I'm sure it would, but it would be easier to remove critical bolts or even the pilots security door with hand tools than a big heavy shock absorber.
