..i know its -6 deg c and all, but had to wait in the petrol station with the engine running after my commute (62 miles), as the key wouldn't turn at all... eventually it popped but need to somehow protect the mechanism from jamming up... WD40? ACF-50? any ideas?

I've just been looking at keyless, as mine can be a fecker.
Lock de-icer and wd40 would be my guess in your situation.

That's happened to me a few times
Sometimes it's the ignition switch first thing in the morning so a little tepid water does the trick
Petrol cap I've used wd 40 ( only thing I had with me )

Don't use wd40 in your locks, it will attract dirt, use graphite powder, not sure it will help the frozen lock but sure it will work better than wd40
