2018 engine ticking noise

Hello guys

I recently bought a used 2018 S1000RR with 12000km. After 1000km i hear a noise from the engine at around 2500-4200rpm.
I think it is from the left side of the valve cover. The noise sounds like ticking.
I dont think that it is rattling from the chain. I dont have rattling on engine start up.

I changed the oils and the filter and the noise in quiter but not much. After 4200rpm i dont hear it. One Bmw dealer says it is normal and the other one says camshaft and follower and the bill is around 3-4000 euros with labour.

How i can upload a video here? I want to open the valve cover to inpect the camshafts but i want a second opinion if somebody can tell me if the sound is normal with these engines

Hey manh, when it comes to ticking it’s normal on the s1000’s and as long as the ticking doesn’t increase or get loud with throttle it’s all good. But hey, if you want an inspection done, by all means get it done by a pro so you don’t have to be second guessing.

Could be the timing chain, could be valve flutter, could be many things but a ticking noise is common on these bikes.
 
Agreed - they are known to be noisy and tapping is usual at lower rpm's until they are drowned out.
Video's should be uploaded to YouTube etc and then linked.

Different oils can change the noise. I stick with the BMW Advantec so that there can be no questions. They don't like 300v being left in them too long.

Stock headers has been removed and currently i run the hp Akrapovic titanium headers with no butterfly in the front. Stock ones was having the issues but it wasn't the noise i hear.
I tried fuchs silkolene pro 4 5w40 xp and new but nothing changed.

I am a car mechanic and i can do the job if i need to change the camshafts and the followers. I just have to find the tool for timing or borrow it.
For sure i have to visually inspect the camshaft and the followers but these days i am very buzy at my workshop. I will try to upload a video in youtube and post it the next days

I was thinking about chain rattle but i dont have start up rattle. I have the original black tensioner cap. I have read about the silver tensioner cap, start up rattle and 15k km.
I will do a valve clearance check plus visual inpsection on the camshafts when i have time and then i will see.
 
As Alex says earlier on this thread, I just changed my cam chain tensioner plug on my 2018 K46 from the black plug to the silver/grey plug which is reccommended for bikes above 15K km and it made a real difference. The grey/silver plug and O-ring push the tensioner back possibly a further 10mm towards the cam chain. Certainly made a difference to the sound of my bike. It's an easy 5 minute job once you have the RHS side panel removed and you don't have to drop the oil level to complete the task. You'll know the sound of the injectors, but this upgrade stopped my bike sounding like a bag of old spanners!
