Hi folks, so my 2015 is burning oil....not a huge amount but approx 250cc per 1000 miles. My Gixxer didn't burn a drop for 40k miles so i find this a bit annoying.

Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing oil burning on their 2015 and if so how much?

I ran the bike in to the letter of the user manual in the hope that the engine would bed in nicely, but i've heard people saying that you should run the bike in harder to avoid any oil burning later on?? Hmmmm any thoughts? The bike is due in for it's 6k service tomorrow ...is it now too late to remedy any oil getting past the piston rings??

I'm guessing there's no point raising this with BMW as 250cc per 1000miles is well within their (crazy 1000cc per 1k miles) "tolerance!"

Cheers

I'd raise it anyway.

They should do a compression check to see how tight the engine is.

I've covered 3000 miles on my 15 without a single drop being used. My GSXR1000 K8 drank oil like fish from new.

Oil Consumption

I've not experienced any issues with oil consumption and my bike is predominantly used on track.

5K miles from my last service and I haven't had to top it up.

Does anyone else find checking the oil level awkward? Given that the sight glass is under the alternator and on the same side as the side stand it's a right pain. I've found that the best way is to use a wee shaving mirror on the bottom step of a step stool and then sit on the bike to bring it upright and keep it stable. Look down and there's the oil level!

Oil Level

Just make sure the bike is level; the engine is sufficiently warm; and then simply hold the bike upright and kneel beside it to check the oil level. It's no more awkward to check than any other bike.

Oh man, shouldn't burn that much oil? You had the bike from new? Just make sure you tell them and get them to note it. While the bike is under warranty!!! Keep us posted lad

Thanks for your feedback guys ;) ...yeah @B33fys i've had the bike from new. Interesting to know that no one else seems to be experiencing any oil consumption?? I've been using the bike for normal road use so just wondering if i just didn't break the engine in hard enough?? Not an easy bike to ride hard on the road without losing your licence! :-/ ....I ran the bike in exactly as the manual states, but i've heard from many people that you should ride the bike in harder to avoid oil consumption later on?? So, at 6k miles is it now too late to address?
I asked BMW to do a compression check, but they said if no fault is then found they would be billing me for the time! (approx 2 hours labour). 250cc per 1k miles is well within their tolerance of 1 ltr per 1k miles (which is clearly ridiculous). They've changed the oil and told me to monitor consumption over the next few thousand miles to see if it settles down?? Hmmmmm any thoughts?

Oil Consumption

If it's within tolerances I wouldn't be overly concerned and would just monitor your oil usage. As for running in, as long as you have followed the guidelines within the Owner's Manual it will be fine. You can't really go wrong as the engine is electronically restricted during running in until after the first service. After 6,000 miles your engine should now easily be run in. To be honest disregard most of what you hear about running in engines as most of it is generally complete myth or just fallacy.

It's your first full service so see how it goes. I have had 4 different BMWs and none have lost oil, but I know a number of owners who have had oil loss across different bikes in the range. Unfortunately it is a case of some do and some dont. I wouldn't be concerned that you have somehow done something wrong running it in, it shouldn't make that much difference.

Quite often the bikes that have had some oil loss early on stop doing it as the miles build up, so see how it goes.
