Was washing the bike yesterday and while drying the fromt wheel I could feel a slight ripple on the rim. On closer inspection the edge of the rim is slightly bent and is easily spotted under close inspection. I did strike a small block of wood at speed on Wednesday which was right in my line and that must have did the damage! Tyre is holding pressure and no excess vibrations have been felt so think I've got away with it. Anyone else had damaged forged wheels? I presume they are softer than the standard steel ones.

Didn't think the bike would need a wash after all the rain at knockhill!
Fingers crossed you don't have to replace the wheel.

Standard wheels are cast aluminium. A standard wheel would probably have cracked or smashed under the same condition. I don't know about the strengths or weaknesses of forged aluminium over cast but the manufacturing processes used give totally different properties to the finished article.

Forged wheels are harder and are designed for frequent tyre changes as in racing

The composition of forged alloy is denser than cast alloy. The advantage with forged, being denser,is more metal can be removed making the wheel lighter.Unfortunately,it also means the rim can be thinner which means it is more susceptible to damage. The plus side is,being denser,it is easier to straighten.Hagon or Motoliner could straighten them for a very reasonable cost-usually without damaging the paint.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm not overly concerned but may get it straightened with a mallet when I get a new tyre 😉
No photos stuart as I'm away working for a few weeks.
Some rain on Sunday loupe but bike all cleaned and tucked up for a few weeks.
