So before my Scotland trip, I decided that just leaving my bike unattended in front of hotels wasn't sensible. I decided to take a chain with me, which I did, but I wanted to see whether I could come up with a longer term technical solution. So I ordered one of these...

and polish... and wax... and cleaned the chain... and back-to-blacked the plastics. I'm in no way a cleaning enthusiast, and cleaning bikes is a major faff because of all the sticky-outy bits, but I was pretty pleased with the results... And a couple of other pics, just because I love my bike.

So after the bike was dropped off in the snow on Thursday night, I've been on holiday with SWMBO in our motorhome. Got back at lunchtime today... Carefully orchestrated because I knew the weather forecast was good. 100+ miles later and I can confidently state I made the right choice of bike...
