Hi I buy quite a few s1000?s I?m not a trader I just enjoy owning them.
sometimes brining the back to like new. I guess it?s a hobby/passion as I?ve got older.
anyway I have recently bought an S1000r (through a finance company).
it was with no keys.
iv had a key sent from bmw using the vin number, it doesn?t fit.
iv sent the barrel and reader off to a ?specialist?, the keys fit but don?t speak to the ECU
EWS fault.
leads me to 2 questions:
can the new keys be coded to the ecu
or
can bmw supply me with a key matched to the ecu serial number.
i understand there may be other issues but I just could do with an
answer on the 2 questions.
thanks in advance
regards Karl

a friend recently got the ews error on his s1000rr.. orginal oem key .. error just came up (while in Spain).... sometimes the ignition would come on without the error and the bike would start fine.. but 95% had the ews error = dead bike :(
the bike is current on its way back from spain... he's spoke to a local dealer and is looking to get the key recoded to the ecu as the first step..
(reading various bits and pieces suggest a software update may also resolve.. will see what happen when the dealer takes a look)

Hay that?s really interesting.
please keep me posted. Thank you.

Would anyone know if the key transmitter is just a transmitter or is it actually coded to the ecu?

ecu (not the key).

my mate got his bike back from spain... and typivally turned the key and no ews error
but he has had the antenna replaced anyway... the antenna is not code... ... the key is coded to the ecu

As above. Key is coded to the ECU and as long as you have one key that works as it should, other can be removed or added as required up to 3 in total.

You can only order keys to the VIN of the bike (not the ECU number), if it doesn?t then match the barrels, you?re a little bit stuck as far as BMW are concerned and would need a whole new lock set which I think may also need an ECU. Been out of the parts game a little too long to know for definite.

Best off giving your local dealer a call just to see what they advise and go from there. :)

Don?t be tempted to buy second hand parts though as they are all locked to the ECU. So unless you get a full set, there?s no guarantees you could make it work.

That?s helped me. At least I understand a little more

thats really helpful. Half of the problem is understanding. I now know how to go forward.
thank you, k

Hi.
just an update.
bikes in at bmw.
odered a key from them, cut to the vin found in the ecu.
still the same.
it leads me to suspect the ring antenna.
hopefully a tech on here can answer me just 1 question.
is the ring antenna coded locked tu the ecu or is it just
a transmitter.
cheers k

Hi Tim that sort of helps and I?m very grateful.
been pulling my hair out over this issue.
can a secondhand one be reprogrammed?
