I’ve read that gearbox issues are quite common on the gen1 but I’ve read it mostly happens to 2nd gear or gear selectors, how normal is it for a 2010 bike to snap a 4th gear tooth clean off ? The engine was rebuilt due to crankshaft 4000km - 1 month ago
Is this a normal issue ? Is there a way to prevent it happening again ?

When I had a gen1 I fitted an HM shifter, was never right and learnt from various owners that gbox suffered with it so took it off. Not saying in yr case but ?

Thanks, I did hear that about hm and healtech too, Mines got the standard shift assist, was thinking maybe an irc auto blip add on would possibly keep my gearbox safer in the future (and make shifting easier)

Whenever I’ve had false neutrals with this bike, I’ve pulled over and turned the bike off as I know the gen 1 is far more temperamental than any jap bike, when the tooth snapped I was only going around 60-80kph (40-50mph) in a straight line at maybe 4k or 5k rpm with my wife on the back taking her to work

it's never "normal" for a gearbox to fail, but it does happen. poorly set up q/s (although in this case it shouldn't be that)tend to be the main cause, but thats the same ion any bike, 08- blades are notorious for shitting the gearbox.if you was looking at keeping it, i'd look more at upgrading the box for a NOVA gearbox, a lot stronger than an an o/e box, an just swap a few of the gears as opposed to a full box (£3k+). saying that, i've had a NOVA gearbox loose a tooth aswell, but that was caused more from the clutch exploding and damaging internals as it turns out, (didn't relaise this till after the engine was rebuilt and then the gearbox went) but it very rare for them to break.
i wouldn't bother going down the blipper/shifter box option personnaly, i'd save you money and put towards a gen 3...

Thanks if it’s not normal then I’d love to keep it as there aren’t many s1000’s on the market out here and my mechanic has already ordered a standard transmission drive from eBay off of a 2014 model, I’ll look into those nova gears tho for the future and won’t add the blipper if it’s not going to give any better protection to the box, my clutch was actually playing up quite a bit for the past 1000 miles my cable actually snapped a week before the tooth broke, a few days before the cable snapped I was riding it quite hard and the clutch lever suddenly had no resistance and wouldn’t engage, so I stopped,
adjusted it a bit from the lever and it seemed ok until it snapped,
I’d love a gen 3 but if your lucky enough to find one it will be for sale for more than what it was bought for new

ref gen 3. not sure where your looking but i've just sold a mint 2016 gen 3, 2500miles, with a lot of track bits added (HP wheels,2d gps trigger, motrad rearsets, full Ti akky etc) for 8.5k, plus another 1200 for all the road kit, which was brand new

I’m in Cyprus now, to bring one from the Uk I’ll pay something like 33% tax on the bike and shipping, i bought my 2010 gen 1 for 9k€ with 30k odd miles and a rebuilt engine out here but on the plus side insurance is only €225 a year 3rd party (no full insurance on bikes out here either) and living in the mountains means my commute to the City is 15km of twisties, so it’s not all bad lol
