I'm looking to do a little servicing over the winter and one f the jobs on the list is to upgrade the brake pads. I have not changed them before is there anything I need to be careful of ?
thanks in advance.

it's pretty standard stuff mate just pull the retaining pins out slide the spring out and the pads should just pop out. I would give your pistons a good clean if your in there as they don't hold up well if you ride in wet/salty conditions, mine are sticking again.

Brake Pads

Brake pads take around 5-10 minutes to fit but just make sure that you give the pistons and calipers a good clean before fitting. Avoid pulling the brake lever, or depressing the brake pedal, when you have removed the calipers from the discs. Once you have refitted the calipers make sure that you pump the lever a few times to seat the pads against the brake discs.

Do you mean you have never changed pads on a bike, or just not on the BMW?

If never then I recommend a search on YouTube. There are some excellent videos on how to do the job.
