If bike is dealer serviced then top up with BMW coolant. Mixing different types of antifreeze can cause problems.

I read this and that’s what got me thinking. Where’s the evidence to suggest that it causes problems? I think what I’ll do is just top up with distilled water, it’s a very small amount and won’t reduce any “anti-freeze” properties.

is that purely scaremongering by BMW to make us purchase their product over any other anti-freeze/cooling products?

Just checked the service invoices and I don’t see any mention of coolant changes so more than likely original coolant. Might be an idea to flush the system and top up with new stuff, maybe something to do this winter.

You won't cause any problems with distilled water Wull but it will change the bottom temperature of protection, can't say by how much but it will change.
Here is a video from the States that shows the effect of mixing two dissimilar anti freezes. For a few pounds extra my advice would be buy the OE one.

Aye, John Clarks in Dundee, they are a very helpful bunch as a rule. If you speak to Alan Kennedy in motorcycle parts he will keep you right. Not sure about posting it though as there are funny rules on posting liquids now.

Tell him Jimmy McCallum recommended them and he'll double your price, lol.

Pop into your local dealer and ask them to top it up, smile when you say please, free? Any dealer worth will not charge you.

I'm going to take your advice and try this at Sainsburys later Phil, my Discovery is nearly empty of diesel, lol

Think I might need a BIG smile.

When is a coolant change done on the service schedule for this bike then?

Comes under non schedule maintenance in the manual, states check coolant and change if needed.

What’s concerning me with mine is “what was the level” when I first got the bike because if it was at the max line then it’s went down quickly. I want to top it back up to the max line so I can keep tabs on it and see how much - if at all - is it using.

Just seems strange that. Thought it would be on a stringent timescale tbh.....
