Hi are any of you using a lithium replacement battery and if so what make and what was the weight saving and any performance issues. I note on Calsport that they have Shido replacement for both alarm and non alarm now.

I have used a Shido LTZ10S. ~950grams vs 4Kg's. So a 3Kg saving.

The have the cranking power for sure, but they do not have a lot of capacity so drain quickly. Not great if you have an alarm/tracker and don't have it on trickle charge.

Lithium Battery

You can't really go wrong with any Lithium battery from the likes of Shido, Shorai or Aliant to name but a few. All of them offer similar levels of performance and save considerable weight over the standard OEM battery. I've personally only ever used them on track/race bikes.

Hi Alex, I have both the BMW alarm and road angel tracker fitted. I am looking at these again having decided against purchasing one 2 years ago when I got my back, as I note Shido now do one specifically for the alarm. I recall BMW telling me that those bikes with the factory alarm have larger batteries. Did you use one with alarm, tracker and was it an alarm Shido version? How did you find it in the cold. I have been reading the reviews on Revzilla forum for Shorai a lithium battery is certainly a marmite choice. It seems people rate them highly or say they are rubbish and leave them stranded on cold days, with nobody in between. The Shorai is supposed to be the premium choice and is more than twice the price of the Shido but the reviews are concerning me.

Can they be charged and maintained with a normal motorbike trickle charger?

As you can see from this for a given size the Lithium has more CCA (Cold Cranking Amps)...its better at starting the bike. Where it falls down is in the amount of energy stored (Ah). So it gives a lot in a short burst, but doesn't have lots...

In my experience with an alarm and tracker fitted it was about a fortnight before it was flat.

I have no experience of Shorai.

Optimate do a specific LiFePo4 charger.... however - any charger that doesn't go over 15v should work...after all, the bike charges them at 14.7v.

I've got a shido lithium battery,it's the ltz10s I think,I had it in my fireblade which had an alarm and no issues, started fine one morning when the seat and shield were covered in frost. I think you can maybe charge them with a normal charger but can't leave it connected. I went safe and bought an optimate lithium.
I don't have an alarm or tracker, bmw drew virtually nothing off the battery in 3 months just sitting without hooked up to charger.

I've ordered a Shorai lfx19a4-bs12 lithium battery and Shorai charger which arrives tomorrow. I will post some photos of weight and size when it's unboxed. I went for the Shorai charger as it seems the most simple plug and forget charger you can use. You can use a normal charger but only one that does not have a de-sulphation programme as apparently that will destroy a lithium battery. Also the Shorai charger will balance the four cells, what ever that means but I read it's important that it's at least done annually. I went for Shorai over other brands because they have recently increased their warranty from three to five years, which I think is positively reassuring.

Did you feel kinda cheated when you opened the box? Like you'd paid all that money and got an empty battery case? That's how I felt when I got my shido, couldn't believe how light it was and that it could even start my bike lol

Shido appears to be 150grams lighter. But its not everything. In fact its barely anything in the grand scheme of things.

Thanks for the findings Richy, let us know how you get on with it over time.

I can understand the extra cost for the weight saving for a race bike but not a road bike . Eat less pies and have a good poo lol

I was at a track day the other month and some guy came round with a brand new lithium one for my BM that he'd been sent wrong so he said, anyway after a short negotiation I ended up being ?20 lighter for this brand new JMT litihum battery

That's not a bad bit of business :)
Just keep the original in good condition (on trickle charge once month) in case.

The difference in weight is unbelievable I think the box the Lithium battery came in weighs more than the battery lol

Had a JMT on my K1300s and used it throughout the winter no worries, the weight difference was amazing, when I get some spare ??'s I will be getting another. It was probably all in my head - but I swear you could feel the weight saving :joyous:

Just ordered a JMT HJTZ10S for my S1k.

240cca compared to the oem 190cca

900 grammes compared to over 30000 grammes too.
