Hi guys

I've shoved mirrors & plate on my HP4 track bike for cheeky Sunday Blasts and testing.
It's running standard wheels and the clocks must've been removed while it was used as a racebike as it's showing in kph and flasing. I'm aware I need to take it to a dealers to change it to mph.
My problem is the mileage (or km) isn't reading anywhere near accurate. The speed in kph seems to be pretty accurate but the trip mileometer isn't.

Example, I did 83.8km (52.8m) the other day, read from the datalogger which was precise but the odometer only read 33.7km (20.9m).
Surely the speed and distance would be recorded from the same sensor?
Any ideas

My understanding is that the ecu records the mileage as well as the display. If the display is put on the bike and the tolerance between the ecu and the display is not close enough it won't work correctly. I believe this is done to stop bikes being 'clocked'. I wonder if that's the issue?

Maybe, as it's been a race bike from day one.
I'm unsure if the clock unit has been removed for racing and then re-fitted when sold last year hence it's not reading the same as the ecu or if the clock unit has been changed.
Either way the reading is only 400km for overall mileage which I know full well is incorrect.
Suppose a trip to a dealers to see what they can find out from the ecu will be needed.

If the mileage is flashing that means there is a discrepancy between the mileage recorded in the bmsk and the mileage recorded in the clocks.

Chances are a dealer will tell you the only solution is to fit a new set of clocks and they will match the mileage to the ecu. At least that's what I've heard through others experiences, I believe they are only 'allowed' to change the mileage of a new set of clocks to match.

Idk about the speed and distance issue. Although the mileage and current speed come from the same sensor, I believe the mileage is 100% accurate while the speed is displayed up to 10% out, but that still doesn't explain why yours is out some 50%...

Let us know how you get on.

Brucie, I had a similar discrepancy with a GS I had a few years back, BMW told me it needed new clocks and set up by them circa ?600.
I used a mobile odometer correction service and had it fixed in 30 minutes with the original clocks still fitted to the bike for ?80.
The guy who fixed it sub contracted out to main dealers as his equipment was much more specialised than the garages have. New clocks are very expensive.

This wasn't the people I used but they might be able to point you in the right direction for your area.

Thanks for the reply guys :)
Yeah I have read that BMW will only adjust the mileage if you buy new clocks from them and I ain't spending ?800+.
It's weird that the mileage is so out and speed seems ok.
Thinking about it the clocks may well have been changed as only flashing 300km when I got the bike.
Thanks JimmyMac, I think I might try that route first as I know BMW will bend me over.
Sure they'll be loads of them down here in London but I'll give em a shout to see if they can recommend a good company.
My main concern is getting it switched to mph and trip odometer reading right, will be a bonus if they can put the mileage from the ecu.
I'll keep you updated when I get round to get it looked at, Trackday looming in a few weeks so got a few things still to do 😊

I think you can change the kph to mph with a GS 911 unit which is not a big deal, it's just a setting change via the interface.

Ive got one but we're a long way apart. Pm me if you get stuck.

Thats correct Andy, fairly easy to do, I also changed Bar to PSI on the GS, 5 minute job. The GS911 is a great tool.

Well, spoke to a few mileage correction people in Glasgow and London and they've said they can't do BMW and it's got to go back to BMW :(

UPDATE

Got a right result today and I'm well chuffed :) :)
Don't really know if it's resolved the trip mileage reading wrong but.....
I'm up in Scotland this weekend and had planned to get the bike to the BMW dealers in East Kilbride on Monday and had previously spoke to the service manager about getting the clock's changed to mph and he mentioned ?25. I made good time driving up and called to see if he could fit me in today.
Anyway, ended up reversing the van up to the back door and they plugged the diagnostics in, got chatting to the mechanics about the issues.
He managed to get the ecu mileage onto the clocks and change it to mph, it did take 35mins to update and I was there for over an hour but was happy he done it :)
The only thing is the DDC fault light and message is now showing which wasn't there before but the DDS has been disconnected so I'll need to look into that.
Went to pay with the manager and he states 'You've had a right bargain here', I was expecting a bill for over a ?100 but he only charged me ?25!! I'm guessing because that's what he quoted me.
Well happy I've now got mph and the correct milage showing and it only cost me ?25 :) :)

Re: DDC Removal

Cheers bud
The mechanic tried to call bmw but it was after 5 by this point. He admitted to checking online and read out that thread while I was putting the tail on.
He also read out that disabling the DDS also loses the temp sensor, which makes sense as mine was reading -69 and explains why I've got an external temp reader.
Looks like a bit of black tape it is for that then lol

Thanks for the update Brucie. So it was the ecu mileage differing from the clocks, result.

I do chuckle when a trained BMW technician gets his info from the forum:).

Great news about the speedo correction Bruce, ?25 is a great deal. EK have always been quite decent with me but it's a bit of a trek.
