Tyre Compounds

After numerous discussions with Metzeler throughout the season, the following information may be useful for some regarding the use of Metzeler Racetec RR and Racetec RR Slick tyres and compound selection. There is no set, or recommended track temperature, transition point for switching between K1 (Soft) and K2 (Medium) race compounds. Instead it will vary between riders, track temperature and surface type. Linked below is the Metzeler Technical Databook which gives an illustrative indication for correct compound selection for track use.

Further information from Metzeler is summarised below.

Metzeler Sidewall Markings:

K1 (Soft) = Blue
K2 (Medium) = Green
K3 (Hard) = Yellow

Front Tyre Compound:

Front tyre compound selection is based not only on air and track temperature and type of circuit (many bends or long straights, bumps etc.) but also on the rider's aggressiveness/riding style that affects the front tyre. The choice of which front tyre compound to use should be based on whether the rider prefers greater stability and precision going into turns (K2) or predictability and the feeling of perceiving the limit of grip (K1).

As regards to weather conditions, when the track temperature increases, the K1 compound tends to lose its compactness and rigidity. This behaviour can cause movement at high angles of lean. A stiffer compound like the K2 minimises this effect. On the other hand, when the track is cold, the K2 compound tends to become more rigid, to the detriment of grip and stability while braking and corner entry. In these conditions it is better to use a soft compound such as the K1.

Rear Tyre Compound:

Rear tyre compound selection is based on the abrasiveness of the circuit, track temperature and on the duration of the performance required. For example, hot tarmac loses some of its natural mechanical grip becoming smoother and more slippery. In these conditions a soft compound (K1) is necessary, as it can stick to the tarmac surface as much as possible.

Cold tarmac, on the other hand, tends to be more aggressive and rougher, offering more mechanical grip which can nevertheless cause the tyre to rip/tear and therefore requires a compound with more resistance (K2).

The above advice from Metzeler is not related to the Racetec RR CompK Slick as its single tyre compound is unique and is for non-competitive use along with the K3 (Hard) compound Racetec RR DOT tyre. Both are designed to be used at any temperature, in any tarmac condition but will not offer the same levels of grip and stability but instead offer greater longevity.
